Here's a link to the earlier post, which was (unfairly IMHO) flagged despite the direct relevance to HN and a largely civil discussion in the comments: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14703661

While awk is indeed under-appreciated, there are many instances where using grep to pre-filter your input is helpful because the grep family (GNU grep, agrep, etc.) can match strings much much faster than awk's regex engine. For exampl

And in typical PC hardware fashion, switching to/from this A20 compatibility mode was handled by the keyboard controller . What in the world? Turns out that the 8042 chip that handled the keyboard had an unused pin which could be &q

Thiel put the vast majority of this money towards buying Xero shares on the public sharemarket. Hard to call that a bold investment strategy. As if that wasn't low-risk enough, he then managed to buy these shares on 50% margin (that&

Personally, I think that the part of this deal that stinks is that the Valar/NZVIF partnership only invested in TWO companies; the majority of funds were just used to buy Xero shares on the public market (yes, they were already listed

Thanks for the link to the research paper, it's a good read. Are you aware of any event sourcing frameworks/datastores that use one (or more) of these strategies to tackle the problem of schema evolution?

While I can't imagine why anyone would want/need to do this... it does do a great job at demonstrating the flexibility of modern CSS! The most clever bit (to me) is the underline characters on the <h1> element.

This is a great recommendation, but I would suggest paying just a little bit more (around $330 USD) and getting the U2515H. It has a higher resolution -- 2560x1440 -- and that makes all the difference if you want to rotate it into portrait

This is very, very cool. It allows you to deploy application logic extremely close to the user (in terms of latency), and Cloudfront has an order of magnitude more edge locations than the other AWS services like EC2 and S3. In fact, if the

Yep, definitely. Here's a quick look at Marriott's ownership structure, which is an operating model shared by many other global hotel brands: http://marketrealist.com/2014/10/why-marriotts-hotels-have-s.

Actually, I consider the immutability of a `namedtuple` instance to be a benefit. I wish more things in Python were/could be immutable. I have been known to subclass `tuple` from time to time when I want both immutability and the abi

My main peeve is that distutils2 died, and with it, the idea of putting package metadata (author, version, dependencies) in `setup.cfg` instead of `setup.py`. It's bad enough that I have a boilerplate `setup.py` that just does `import
