This is pretty awesome! Great "hack" that uses the ADB debugging protocol in a way that probably wasn't intended... Regarding security, sometime back in Android 4.x the ADB protocol was updated to include public-key authenti

It seems that this post has been (temporarily?) taken down. There was a link to the draft paper on federated Byzantine fault tolerance, which is what they're using for the Stellar Consensus Protocol. It makes for fascinating reading.

Agree 100%. In the span of a decade or so, the goalposts for what a "small business app" have moved dramatically: multiuser by default, offline editing/sync, usable on mobile devices, modern-looking UI/UX... but the A

Thank you for coming back to this thread to share your experience, much appreciated! I did not realize RethinkDB lacks a query planner/optimizer. That is a huge downside. The docs didn't seem to make much effort to point out thi

Not necessarily true, you can often get an older Nexus device quite cheaply and then upgrade the OS. That's how I got my hands on Android 5.0 -- and it really transformed an old and tired phone into something new and marvelous.

Are you able to go into more detail about the performance of RethinkDB? Considering to use it for a new project but haven't been able to find anything solid about performance except vague and hand-waving "not very fast" anec

It's not such a big deal; in Hong Kong, for instance, all property (with very very few exceptions) is leasehold land. The most common term is now 75 years. The city has been in existence long enough that many of the original leases

It works quite well. They've done a great job at following Google's "Material Design" prescriptions while -- surprisingly -- not actually using the Polymer framework. First time I've seen that. The app loads some

I'm confused: what exactly is the problem here? Google APIs are designed [1] to be accessed on behalf of a Google account holder by client-side code without any server component being involved. The client-side code does not use cli

Very cool - I like your idea to store all of the data using a Google Drive realtime document. But I'm not sure how you are able to handle authentication and permissions, e.g. limiting a field/model to only be visible to certain u

At least Google has been good (so far) about providing plenty of warning when shutting down existing services. Can't say the same about $RANDOM_STARTUP, where the notice period is often "end of the current month".

Yeah. I'm running a small accommodation/guesthouse business in Hong Kong and our demographic is 18-35 expats, mostly European. First contact method is 10% voice / 20% on SMS / 70% on Whatsapp.

I don't really understand why everyone is pooh-poohing this; it's just a more creative way to rate-limit their signups than relying on the usual "you are number 123 on the beta invite list".

I think it's fairly difficult for a US-based company to (legally) operate out of a mainland China data centre. So it looks like they are doing the next best thing: multiple Asian data centres which are "near" to China.

The most interesting part (to me) is that the server will handle e.g. "PUN" as though it actually said "PUT". I wonder if this could be used as an attack vector? Sounds a lot like a "confused deputy" situation
