But most ISPs will have DNS lookup records. Most users aren’t savvy enough to set their own DNS servers. I’m not sure on the current status of DNS over HTTPS, but I’d imagine .gov could just compel cloudflare or whoever to provide logs.

Sadly I think more of a scorched earth approach is required. The web as we know it and the handful of corporations that dominate it are known to be compromised and no amount of work arounds will change that. The real answer is the complete

I think it’s fairly well understood that it’s more or less a rubber stamp process[0] I’d wager a phone call or email is likely all that was needed in many cases. By “no one” I mean some sort of counter-balancing entity. I’m not sure why you

Is this sarcasm? Do members of the intelligence community have a history of wanting less information than they can get?

As it is right now, it would allow access to the internet search and browser history of anyone in the world, without probable cause or a warrant. But to be clear, this is just a reduction in friction of the previous process which was to jus

I wonder how broadly they define “internet browsing and search history”. I’m assuming email is somehow included. I wonder if mobile app data falls under the umbrella.

Once again the lack of media coverage on this is appalling. Rand Paul has introduced an amendment that goes up for vote tomorrow that would disallow this surveillance on American citizens, which of course is not expected to pass. McConnell

Thanks for the thoughtful response. It was not intended to be as sarcastic as it read. I don’t really think of HN as an anti-capitalist echo chamber, especially given it’s venture capitalist origins.

If you don’t think Avid / Pro Tools relies / relied on lock-in as much as Apple you weren’t paying attention. It was tied to hardware dsp boxes and iLok dongles for a long time. Pro tools first big “unlocking” came when they bough

There’s also the legacy of pro tools and logic. For many years pro tools was the only game in town for serious non-linear audio editing, and did not support midi at all. Around the same time period Logic was the only game in town for seri

That includes 401k and IRAs etc. which obviously very few living outside of middle class have. In addition, stock ownership has been on steady decline for everyone but the upper middle class.

Citation needed. “Comfortable” is obviously subjective, but the discussion was around ownership of stocks. Even these[0] models have it at >=50% and they are at least 15 years old, and disparity has only increased since then. [0] https:

Sorry I’m not sure I understand the point you are making. Most models have the numbers of Americans living in poverty or lower class as above 50% of the US population. It’s unlikely if even what they term “lower-middle class” owns real esta

I had a very hard time understanding why this setup was so widely accepted during the last corporate welfare program in 2008/2009 when the amount was in the $500B range. I’m now at a complete loss as to why there isn’t more of an outcr

This comes off as pretty heavy victim-blaming bootlicking. Do you see an alternative way the corporation could have handled this that would at least given the impression they valued the lives of their labor force?
