Neat! NOS germanium transistors are still highly sought after(and therefore expensive) for music gear such as guitar distortion pedals and pre-amps. They impart a lovely ‘gooey’ quality that modern transistors just can’t do.

Could you expound on using matrix for long form content? I host a synapse homeserver, and feel like I’m not using it to its full potential.

HashiCorp Nomad[0] can do scheduled periodic tasks across a cluster of machines. Much lighter weight than Kubernetes, but a shotgun flyswatter when compared to cron. [0] https://nomadproject.io

Well played. The “think of the children” trick is almost always effective and difficult to counter.

One of the cool features of SSB is making actual P2P a first-class feature. It works just as well on an isolated private adhoc network as it does over the web. I wish more dencentralized/federated services operated this way.

Why does it need to compete with YouTube? Is it really a zerosum situation?

In my experience using the userspace daemon on both BSD and macOS there was increased cpu overhead and slightly higher network latency compared to Linux with a module or built in.

I’ve dabbled with OpenBSD and FreeBSD for personal projects for a long time, but have never had the opportunity to use them for anything “serious”. I am trying hard to figure out a path to change this. ZFS, Jails, VNET, and the stellar secu

Is “1 computer livestock” even possible? After your single cattle is murdered, the next one has to be raised right? State has to come from somewhere. Downtime has a cost for most businesses.

Right. I still prefer terse help text from the command line, and more in-depth in the man pages. I find commands with copious -h output and having to pipe that into a pager or using scroll back a far worse UX than just opening up a man page

This is a great resource, thanks for the effort. I strongly disagree with the “ Don’t bother with man pages” advice. It’s extremely annoying when tools don’t provide a manpage. The overhead of opening up a browser to reference command is cu

I’ve ran the latest kernel with latest openzfs git since around kernel 4.x, currently on 5.9.11. I build inkernel as opposed to a module. There have been a couple cases where I had to wait a week or two for compatibility fixed to get merged

Even if they developed the server tech, it seems they’d be more likely to just use it internally to power their services as opposed to trying to reach a whole new market that historically they aren’t very good at working in.
