My brain parses all caps ‘APT’ as ‘advanced persistent threat’. In regards to the package manager, doesn’t OpenAPT imply a closed apt? Is that a thing?

You set a preconfigured time - I think it defaults to 1 bar. It takes some practice and getting used to, and obviously isn’t quite the same as being in the same room, but it works well enough to stumble upon some great serendipitous moments

I’m in the same boat. My hacky workaround is to use syncthing to keep the iCloud directory syncd up with non-Apple devices.

A very cool, overlooked, and timely feature of Reaper is NinJam which is a way to “jam” with people remotely through a fixed time-delay. It’s been around for at least 15 years, but looks like the author has recently started updating the fea

I think most have moved on to supercollider or puredata. A proprietary but much more approachable and functional offshoot is Max/MSP.

Exactly. Made painfully clear with the messaging that “hey, a lot of people die from car crashes and the flu every year” directly followed by quotes of “these great American companies such as Boeing are NOT replaceable”. IOW: old and/o

Talking to some friends in the mid-west and some less populated flyover states, there is still a very prevalent sentiment that this is all a coastal big city problem.

Better than having to choose an IDE, is to not have to choose an IDE. It’s pretty liberating to put some text in a single file, pass that file to a compiler, and have a single executable binary. A devolved workflow I know.

No doubt there are always extremists! Imagine if in the programming world people bickered about things that had no affect in performance or functionality - say like whitespace or which text editor to use

VERY roughly: - bring a full Bonavita kettle to 205f - hand grind 16-20g beans to roughly ‘beach sand’ - bloom For 25 seconds by while slowly pouring and simultaneously agitating - fill to the top with water - start a 25-45 second extractio

Yes for sure all from AeroPress. So many knobs to turn. Aside from the obvious variables like quality and quantity of beans and water, the following have HUGE effects: - coarseness of the grind - water temp - bloom time - steep time - lengt

The camping/road trip scenario is what lead me to AeroPress many years ago. The fact that it was able to replace all the other methods and home and work was a total bonus! Disclaimer: total AeroPress nerd and fanboy

My morning ritual is a 20oz cup with an AeroPress. Takes me 7 minutes total including grinding the beans.

Hmmm. Perhaps not the _world_, but if you can’t make a cup that is in at least your personal top 10, you need adjust process and/or ingredients. I can cover a pretty wide range of my personal tastes - from syrupy espresso-like to smoky

Perhaps you could blog or tweet about this to draw some more attention to it? Clearly there is an appetite for this, and it could get some more people involved with matrix.

I don’t have any hard data, but LA mayor Garcetti mentioned in one of his briefings this week that while the total number of accidents has gone down, the number of ‘severe’ accidents has increased, due to speeding, ignoring traffic signals&

Assuming OpenSSH >=8.2 wouldn’t FIDO/U2F be the best convenience/security balance? It seems to work great with all the yubikeys I’ve tested with.

It seems weird there wasn’t more emphasis on the implications of running your own CA. I can imagine lots of people coming across this article and doing a quick copy pasta not realizing what just happened.

This is one of the more dismissive and ignorant comments I’ve ever seen in HN. Do you have some subject matter expertise or was this just intuition?

It’s sad that the likelihood of legal encrypted Ham is decreasing. This would be such a fun and useful platform to start spinning up services on.

Good point, but that’s still a userspace implementation. Apple would need to do the XNU work since their open source model is so broken, and they seemed to have deprioritized Unix nerds awhile back so…

Seems like a very long shot to make it into Apple products both because of the license and the fact it wasn’t invented in Cupertino. FWIW the userspace implementations are quite good, and still out performs IPSec.
