My father grew up speaking Welsh at home. Years later, on a family holiday to Brittany, we heard some local old men speaking Breton. My dad was able to understand much of what they were saying. I had never realised the languages were that c

JSDoc plays a similar role with Javascript. Moreover it is supported out of the box by VSCode, so add a few JSDoc comments to your types and functions, and intellisense instantly kicks in.

I swear I'm about to get dumped by my wife for Claude. He gives her all the answers she wants, whereas I only give her the ones she needs.

I hit a retread as it became detached from the lorry I was following on the M25, UK. Scary moment, similar to the video in TFA, + an expensive repair job.

I believe what OP refers to as design is largely styling. Design goes much deeper and starts from a position of close empathy with the user. As a dev working on a team that now has professional designers, the difference is night & day.

2 selected anecdotes is not exactly an overwhelming argument. IIRC, the golden generation who actually fought in the war voted against Brexit. And why mention race at all? TFA is about fascism. From the surveys I've seen, you're n

When we do the phishing awareness training at $WORK, we are told any sense of urgency is suspicious, especially from an established org. Most would give you at least a month before something as draconian as locking your account.

> shadow IT I read somewhere that the number of Excel "programmers" is an order or magnitude larger than all professional programmers in all other languages put together. Makes you wonder which is the "shadow IT"!

Maybe it's just me but that always grated with me a bit. It felt sometimes a bit like a Today programme interview where "presenter style" was the product. Not to take anything away from the content though. It's the sort

I like these technologies. They may not be as energy efficient as using more exotic materials, but what they do use is simple, cheap and often sourced locally. Such economic factors are often as important to the ROI as the purely scientifi

No capitals needed. I have written many backend services around raw Vertx very successfully. It's simple, well documented and predictable, mainly because everything is done in code. Deviating from Quarkus's standard behaviour was

Vertx uses Netty as the event loop handler for concurrent IO. Vertx adds a simplified asynchronous API on top of Netty (whose API can be pretty complicated), making backend services that need to handle large numbers of concurrent connection

Quarkus is just a little too much like magic for me. Too many annotations hides what's going on underneath, which makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. But I'll accept that's probably just me. Vertx on the other hand, which it i

Small quibble: the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey all have "(UK)" appended. They are not actually part of the UK, but British Crown dependencies. Possible confusion (as with most things British and overseas).
