After reading a few of the dialogues, love reading these BTW, I highly suspect that Plato often misrepresented Socrates- would often put words in his mouth. With that said.. I think it’s very OK for Socrates to be wrong or to disagree with

Very much agree. Computer related stuff in general, like anecdotes about buying brands to high level programming, and a wide spectrum of STEM discourse is great on HN, but I often find myself scratching my head like “lol really?” at comment

My experience living in Taiwan is that those terms may literally mean foreigner but their practical usage means white/western people. A native or black american would not be called that. Also, lao wai is the one they go for when they a

I did a lot of MDMA and ecstasy in my 20s. The experience definitely rewires you. I’m laughing at anyone who has never done it, or any psychedelics, speaking with authority on the matter and harrumphing about a lack of evidence. Do a high d

I live in Hsinchu, about 20 minutes from this 7-11. This is probably the only nice looking one in the city and not an average. 99.9% of 7-11s in Taiwan are consistently as ugly as 7-11s in North America. When I visited Tokyo, the convenienc

“ China as a country and culture only cares about one thing. Making the entire world an empire for the Han. They see everyone else as inferior, barely human.” Easy does it MAGA. The PRC is a different animal than regular Chinese people.

I really waned to like the Gefland books, and Algebra starts off so well, but they are actually intended as barebones exercise books to go along with lectures which introduce the problems. Or, they could for advanced students who are intere

I know someone who retired from working in the LED industry in Taiwan. She said the manufacturers were never going to make enough money from lights which last for ten or twenty years. They are 100% degrading the product so that they need to

I often think people are role playing on faceless social platforms, such as here or reddit. The behaviour here is much better of course due to excellent moderation plus this site has a strong career/education angle which tends to have

I’m extremely soft on crime because I believe that countries which have adopted this stance have reduced levels of crime. As a Canadian, this is clear as day to me just by comparing the US to Canada. It’s annoying when talking to people who

I’ve seen this kind of attitude before in Taiwan many times over the years. I can’t help but feel that it comes from a place a bitterness due to being forced to learn English at a young age. I would agree with you in full in certain edge c

you really should check out Kurosawa’s own films if you haven’t. He is easily a top five all time director. his films run laps around basically everything else.

I actually find his colour films to be incredibly charming. Really Tokyo Story is the only green tea on rice film of his. still excellent but one could be in for bit of a surprise if they only watched that by Ozu.

When my daughter is a bit older I’m going to buy her the Singapore school books for young math and pay her a salary to complete them. I don’t doubt their effectiveness.

Well, a mathematics degree is one of the highest income earners for a reason so its usefulness is beyond dispute. I personally have life and artistic goals which take priority of my time over math but I’m willing to allow mathematics (toget

I think society could use an extra hour of school, at least twice a week. This sort of thing would be a great class which has no homework or exam pressure. You get credits for being there and participating in discussions.

I think Blender is the most exciting software being developed today. I really think we are on the cusp of an indie cg film/show golden age like what Hollywood has in the 70s and 90s. The possibilities with CG are sky high but the barri
