It was originally titled "Black Mesa: Source," but Valve contacted the team and asked them to drop "Source" so that it wouldn't be confused with an official Valve project. To my knowledge, that's the only world they've given, which sounds l

That's because the software Google used didn't actively browse the networks to look for documents, but passively intercepted and logged packets. If they wrote a program that actually searched the networks for shared folders and copied infor

I can understand calling Esperanto a "failure" since it didn't achieve its goal of becoming a common international auxiliary language, but how has Klingon failed? Its purpose was to be the language for a fictional sci-fi race.

In case anyone is interested, the program to which I referred is "OFF System". Its home page is supposed to be http://offsystem.sourceforge.net/ , but unfortunately it's down now and the project seems dead. The paper was on the site, but I

The more one studies computer science, the less one believes that information can be owned in any meaningful way. I remember reading a paper on a "lightnet" that basically XORed arbitrary blocks of data together, then produced a recipe on h

My understanding of existing case law regarding safes is that you can be compelled to give up a key, as it is just physical property to which the state has right to request, but can not be compelled to give a combination, as that is just me

P2P DNS exists. One implementation is Namecoin. I've heard of ideas of making a large mesh network with people's Wi-Fi routers, but there are many technical hurdles to overcome there, though it should be workable, if excruciatingly slow.

I don't know what you mean about "many ways to declare... a function." Unless you mean the fact that you can elide repeated types ("func foo(a int, b int)" vs "func foo(a, b int)"), which is just simple sugar to stop repeating yourself; or

I don't see how that would stand up in court, but I'm sure that ISPs will enforce this more strictly. I believe most ISP agreements with homes already prohibit operating a publicly-available hotspots, anyways; they just need to crack down.
