I disagree. Alcohol is claiming more and more lives from liver disease and throat and stomach cancer in the UK [1] and Ireland. It's not just drink driving that's a problem, but also the death toll from alcohol abuse over the long term whic

I think Facebook is more entrenched than myspace ever was and that'll make it more resilient. Now everyone is on Facebook not just teenagers, e.g. my 50yr+ aunts and uncles who would have been PC-phobic before. That'll make it harder to l

The number one reason for me would be because lots of the things covered on HN tend to be US focused to the point that people forget anywhere else exists. I'm tired of articles praising some service provider or payment processor only to fin

There are a few existing applications. Autodesk have released a hobbyist package ( http://www.123dapp.com/ ) and there's online ones as well ( https://tinkercad.com/ ). OpenSCAD is my choice because it allows you to parametrically design ob

It's not acceptable to a lot of people, like me, who consider it an unacceptable violation of a persons human rights. It's hard to fight against an entrenched practice especially when speaking out against it leads to accusations of religiou

This is also significant because it's an ARM tablet. Up until now all the Plasma Active demos I've seen have been on x86 tablets. I see it has Mali-400 GPU. Rumour has it that an open source, reverse-engineered driver is on the way. Things

With counties bringing in even more restrictions on free speech which contradict each other this will be fun. Take the Armenian genocide for example. Denying it will be a crime in France, but claiming it happened can lead to charges of "ins

You seem to forget that it's not just Americans who consume Hollywood content. NetFlix is great in theory but it's not available to everyone and even when it is the selection can suck. As for 10+Mbps connections? I wish. I had dial-up 4 yea

I question the 'expertise' of a random poster on the internet and the reasons they would go to such lengths (astroturfing does happen, especially with powerful lobbyists in play). I'm no lawyer but just glancing at their 'analysis' I spotte

Take a look at teardowns of any modern mobile device and you'll see there's nothing really spectacular about the iPhone. It's kind of like saying workers at McDonalds suffer more health problems because their work requires more 'attention'

So this is thingiverse.com but presumably without the prevention of copyright infringement[1]? As a 3D printer owner Thingiverse is awesome. I encourage people to check it out, if anything just to see how far DIY 3d printers have come. [1]
