It's not acceptable to a lot of people, like me, who consider it an unacceptable violation of a persons human rights. It's hard to fight against an entrenched practice especially when speaking out against it leads to accusations of religious intolerance and the same old argument playing on STI fears and AIDS hysteria. I think children deserve protection regardless of the religious beliefs of their parents or the place of their birth.
One of the arguments I make is that a society that is willing to allow non-consenting male infants be strapped down and irreversibly mutilated is only one step away from allowing Female genital mutilation. Think I'm exaggerating? Look up the American Academy of Pediatrics policy change which would have lead the way for FGM and genital cutting in the US. They had to back down over public anger but it shows the mentality of the organisation.
