You can charge for the distribution of the software. You just don't have the ability to restrict the distribution downstream.

It is not a requirement that open source software must be freely redistributable, just that you have the freedom to exercise free redistribution.

You mean making the software proprietary . The definition of open source itself is neutral on whether it's a commercial effort or not, or whether it's a community effort or not, or whether it's both community and a commercia

the space problem is a bit different. we probably don't want to turn the whole planet into high density housing, even if we could energy wise, but the only thing getting in the way of solving the problems we have is politics as in unw

I mean, we could ensure that not a single person on Earth went hungry. We could do that today, with our level of food production technology. But we don't, because we don't like the economics of it. We could swallow it and do it a

Matters in the universe is a lot. Ditto the amount of energy. People may argue that unlimited growth is unsustainable, and I agree. But what people don't realize is just...how much resources there is and how much just sits there being

These resources are abundantly available on Earth and endlessly recyclable. It's a question of economics, energy production, and negative externality. At some point, your problem will be heat, not energy, because roughly speaking human

Cities aren't overcrowded, not even close, but cars sure do take a lot of space, especially with laws and regulations that required excess parking spaces.

The problem is really negative externality and pollution caused by production and consumption. That's really the core issue of our global economy and technological landscape, and probably the greatest constraint that limits us from exp

If it's really a fundamental engineering challenge, then reporting on the issue should have reflected that. They do not. It's basically broadly the same problem elsewhere. Hong Kong's challenges are political, not engineering

That's simply a problem of engineering design and building code regulation, and the current assumption of how we design and construct buildings. You can double the volume of a flat area by adding a story height worth of flat area. Thri

Just because you have a lot of high skyscraper doesn't mean you have an adequate supply. I have seen pictures of those high rise apartment buildings. What's clear to me is that they're frequently skinny and tall. The tallness

Cars will easily make a place feel like a 1984 metropolis. They need space intensive infrastructure to drive on, which is asphalt and concrete.

We can't really talk about tradeoff of immigration if we have grossly inefficient land usage patterns and the ability to construct enough home if we so choose.

Better commuter rail/light rail is desirable. On the other hand, a commute is still a commute. I'm actually quite convenient to a commuter rail station that ties into the city's subway quite well. But I pretty much hate comm

We get urban sprawl and people building towns and homes in wildly inappropriate areas, such as forests. Which is why you see people's house going up in flames due to wildfire. Meanwhile, human habitation continues to be a very small po
