There's a great deal more to a language than syntax: libraries, actual implementations, and so forth (so say nothing of documentation, community and other non-code matters). PEP 3003 puts the brakes (temporarily!) on one point of evolution

I agree, though as a matter of policy you have to ask - how do you actually "break them up"? On what basis? You can't just have the government ordering companies to break up. Unlike, say, Standard Oil, antitrust laws don't apply here (the

True, but you've gotta figure that "our datacenter was swallowed by a volcanic eruption" is at least a cooler excuse than "DFW is having weird power issues". If you must go dark, go dark in style! (And keep a good eye some off-site backups

Not to over-nitpick, but there's surely a difference between private and government debt. Not that public debt is a good thing by any means, but the trend of treating of the government as a "family" that needs to "live within its means" st

True enough RE: importance of saving the financial system, though there's plenty of room for debate about the best way to go about it. For instance: what should the government (read: taxpayers) get in return for their guarantees of these c

Sure, but to the extent that the author is comparing two numbers to generate shock value, the fact that he's really comparing an amount of apples spent to a number non-inflation-adjusted oranges lent makes the whole thing a bit misleading.

That 300 million isn't inflation-adjusted, is it? Also, most of the $4-trillion-range figures are of guarantees , not actual dollars spent or committed - a good deal of that money has been or is going to be repaid. If the banks default on

The author makes a telling comment about how "worker-bee" programmers can be reassigned that displays the same contempt for developers as the managers who call them "resources". Call it a pet peeve, I guess. One other factor to consider is
