I think the only thing I would add to this very sensible list is to have multiple, different classes of tasks that engage different skills. This way you can often work very long but not feel tired or bored.

Thanks for the pointer. This really brought home to me the 'baud rate' issue of interplanetary communication. Right now, I'm so used to streaming movies at home that I forget the challenges of communications across such vast distances . Per

I really liked the article - it was very coherent and easy to follow. BTW, is there a full-res movie of the descent? I've only seen the 'thumbnails' stitched together of the heat-shield and the parachute.

This is a great link, thanks. I'm watching it and I have a question about reentry (should apply to all capsules, like Apollo, SpaceX not only MSL): basically, how is this thing stable? I see the animation and how the capsule twists and turn

Hmm, perhaps: there is a passage somewhere about how they set up a scheme where instead of the one person doing all the different computations they set up sequences where each person would only do one computation but for different problems

Full circle. Remember that the original 'computers' were people who performed computations. If you recall Feynman's self indulgent book 'Surely you are joking' he has a chapter where he describes how they would write algorithms which were t

I've never been in industry, but to me there are similarities between running a lab and running a business. First you have to convince some one (a funding agency, an investor) that your idea is interesting and will work. Then you have to ma

I've read about killings before, I lived through 9/11, but for some reason these killings struck me really hard. Even more than school shootings. Perhaps because I think of the cinema as sanctuary - a place of make believe where we go to es

We were taught on the 8085. We had these cute little kits that were hinged wooden boxes that you opened up. They had all the circuitry exposed which was awesome, a 4 or 6 digit 8-segment LED display and a numeric keypad. Sometimes the kits
