Lack of competition often comes from municipal governments granting local monopolies. Good luck fighting that out city by city.

Along with the reasons others mentioned, 2 cells means higher voltage, so the battery can deliver the same power using less current.

Cheaper, more portable, battery powered ultrasound would make the technology more accessible to developing countries. This will save lives eg from childbirth complications.

Service looks awesome, but I wish you guys would use HTTPS on the checkout page (or even better, the entire site!). Let's Encrypt can give you a certificate for free: https://letsencrypt.org/getting-started/

Been said many times before but I’ll say it again: If money could buy great products, Microsoft would still be relevant.

Yes but it’s slow. While your Bluetooth is transferring the data slowly, the entire rest of the system is burning power while it waits.

In fact, turning off Wi-Fi can hurt battery life. LTE requires more power, GPS kicks on more often, and if you have an Apple Watch, data transfer is forced to use Bluetooth which means both devices remain in a high powered state for longer.

This is a bad take. If your threat model has you concerned about people who follow you around and exploit your Wi-Fi firmware, you probably shouldn't ever have Wi-Fi on -- or maybe you shouldn't be using a smartphone. For everyone

It's not just a matter of the space on disk to hold 32-bit libraries. They must also be loaded into memory if there are 32-bit processes running. This degrades performance system-wide, not just for the abandonware apps.

Probably, but a big problem with structured light is the inverse square law. You need a lot more power to recover depth of far objects -- this is why all the Project Tango phones are yuuuge and not selling too well. There are ways around th

There are many reasons why someone can't simply move. Maybe they're caring for parents who live in the area. Perhaps they want their kids to attend well-funded Bay Area schools, so the kids can have a shot at earning more money. I

I know nothing about how Electron renders GIFs, but can guarantee you that there's no world where 16x16 animation should take up 20% CPU. Suggesting that we should convert them to tiny videos is completely missing the point.

I'm curious as to why their fix was to host the Service Health Dashboard on more AWS regions. It seems like the responsible thing to do is to host it entirely on a competitor's service. That way, it's very simple to know that

No. There is simply no excuse for this kind of abusive environment to exist at your company. If you are CEO, you are responsible: - Kalanick doesn't interact with every employee every day like the olden days, but he certainly hired the

Apple has pressured Foxconn to build out renewable capacity for certain steps of iPhone manufacturing by 2018. There is a lot of work to be done in manufacturing (much harder problem) but they have definitely made a public commitment to red
