I'm the same way. Not to over-generalize, but in my experience that feeling is a big 1) guy thing 2) engineering-type thing 3) type-A-personality thing and god help you if you're all three! All three of those groups are overrepres

I think you've unintentionally explained why your advice-giving worked in that moment, too -- Bob knew you were coming from a place of good faith! You weren't "just"-ing him -- you knew the intricacies of his situation

Oh man, in my experience, migraines in particular are the worst for this because a ton of the common "justs" are actively conflicting "Just cut out caffeine/just try some caffeine when you feel one coming on!" "

Operating a massive, distributed, real-time ad platform requires lots of engineers.

This is a really good take, and I wanna expand it further: when interest rates are lower and planning horizons are longer, valuations get bigger . If you think of a company’s market capitalization as a rough measure of its future cash flow

Yeah, I don’t think it’s doom and gloom. But I also don’t think it’s prudent to say “don’t worry about that layoff, you’ll get a new BigTech job tomorrow!” Times are weird.

You’re talking way too hyperbolically to take seriously. Yes, GMail does, in fact, “have a clue.” They do pretty well. They’re not perfect, and I have specific complaints, but to pretend they’re totally clueless and inept discredits anythin

Nah, not on iPhones they don’t. Barrier to entry (and risk of breaking their phone) of jail breaking is too high for ~99% of iPhone users. Android might be a different story. But not THAT different. People REALLY rely on app stores.

Damn, that sounds like an extremely cool career. Have you written about it in more detail before? Would love to hear more specifics (as allowable) about your path.

Well, this is a weird argument. There are lots of things that are posted on the internet that are illegal to re-post elsewhere without attribution/payment. That's, like... all of internet copyright law.

I did work at a company that implemented SAFe, and it was miserable. I am interested to read commentary from someone who has had a good experience, because those seem to be so rare.

I don’t know about much more. The last time I saw the top ends of Google’s IC pay scale, it was ~$1.5 million TC, and that was for, like, two people. I’m being nit picky. But big tech isn’t THAT insane. 7 figure TC is incredibly, incredib

Wow, this is the kind of comment I come to HN for. Thanks for this. There are a lot of vocal SAFe detractors, so it’s nice to hear about why it could actually be good.

I think it’s pretty clear from context that “climate change” in this case is shorthand for “human-caused warming and carbonization of oceans,” even if that’s not explicit. “Climate change” is an overly broad term, true, but it’s also very e
