I mean, by almost any measure, some of the most brilliant programmers of the past 20 years have worked in ads at Google and Facebook, yes.

I think another, underrated benefit is having something to point at for new people. When an engineer joins the team 6 months into the project, it's important for them to have context on why you're doing what you're doing. Eve

Man, that subreddit reads like the most massive case of sour grapes imaginable. It's just people (presumably a lot of physicians / med students?) griping about how NPs and PAs are acting too good for their titles. All the actual s

haha you're not wrong but it's an async process that could take longer, so then you get into "well if it's <200ms we won't show a spinner, but if it takes longer we will..." it's a settings page where

just this week, I put a minimum 200ms wait time on a loading spinner, because otherwise we thought it felt "buggy" because it was completing too quickly!

Social media isn't totally global, though -- I would be interested to see this youth mental health data correlated with smartphone uptake in a given country.

It's a good question. I mean, if there are lots of managers at Meta who only have 4-5 direct reports, you could see this scaling decently well -- turn two teams into one, and that's not so bad. But I don't think one person ca

To be slightly less cynical, I think they just mean that individual engineers at Meta are responsible for large chunks/vertical slices of work, so your work has a lot of individual impact on getting things out into the world.

Supporting your point further, one of the reasons Georgia gets so much film/TV work is because they are unfriendly to unions, so labor costs are much lower.

I don't think the discrepancy is the same in any other field of knowledge work, though. Even hospital CEOs and partners at law firms are making 3-15x what their doctors and attorneys are making. Not 100-200x. The magnitude of the gap i

It's a good question, honestly. My go-to answer is just "scale" -- the number of people required to go from "1,000 video calls that are pretty good" to "1,000,000 video calls that are close to perfect" is

For a company that focuses on enterprise sales as hard as Zoom does, I think a super rough ballpark is that all-in engineering staff are not more than 50% of headcount.

I’d have to find it, but on a recent “Who’s Hiring” thread, someone was looking for an e-commerce dev for a “cash4tungsten” site I think there was quite a rush in, and maybe a rush out, too… (… I’m currently staring at my own cube)

I agree. I’ve literally seen the word “mob,” like, 5 times in this thread already. I think… it’s just an overzealous application of a policy? I don’t really think there’s a woke gang on this one.

I don’t really see a mob on this one. Twitch has a platform policy that they enforced - probably a little too heavily here. Is there some sort of community outcry elsewhere? I think most people who understand the context of the clip (AI-gen

Yeah, I think the title is a little provocative to get you to read, but I ended up agreeing with it. Maybe "don't try to be a teacher during code reviews" is slightly more precise?

This is a super-simplified summary, but I think it's generally accurate. The basic thesis of EA is "it is your duty to improve/save as many human lives as you can." At some point, a lot of EAs realized that there were ma

I don't think you should be blindly downvoted for this -- I think it is a totally valid question, and one that the YIMBY movement needs to find a way to answer consistently. Personally, I would say that lots of low-density communities
