If you care enough to describe advertising as “mind rape,” why use the service at all? Why should you be allowed to take a thing from them without paying for it in some way? Just because you are technically able?

> not that expensive yeah, but it’s hard to overstate how much less expensive “free” is than anything else. I don’t know how you do free video hosting for the entire world without YouTube’s model.

I think this is a great take, with one exception: I think the loss of (free) ad-supported YouTube would be a devastating loss for the world at large.

Why, from first principles, should YouTube allow this? Why shouldn’t they go thermonuclear? I understand ads are annoying - I block as many as I can! - but I’ve never seen someone put together a coherent defense of the practice.

Doesn’t preclude the ability, no, but there are only so many hours in the day. Writing good code is a very separate skill set from that kind of problem-space work, and software engineers are mostly hired for the former.

I think it’s not unreasonable to just want to start a startup for its own sake. - work really hard on your own business - create a new thing rather than work on an old one - work with a small group of very motivated people - low possibility

It is notoriously extraordinarily difficult to fire an underperforming federal employee. It is possible, but generally, you are committing to keeping this person around for quite some time.

I understand the impulse. Truly, I do. But there's pretty much no human being alive that requires zero social interaction to feel good. And GP's point is that you gotta make friends while you are more able. You may not be intere

Sure, not everyone has a problem being alone, but most people do, especially when it's for extended periods and, critically, not by choice. This is a post about a society-wide problem. Human beings are social animals. Time spent arou

The Wikipedia article actually has a mention of that too, in regards to a pin on a tank machine gun. I’ve personally heard of a tiny device called the “fuck wrench”…

So, one meta-layer of discussion up: do we think the recent surge of Kagi discussion on HN is indicative of a real wave? Or is “picking a different search engine” gonna be something only 1% of users ever do again? I honestly think that even

The merger makes a ton of sense — Unity was super late to the game building their own Demand-Side Platform for ads, and that’s how you make money in mobile games now, so they had to buy their way out of the problem. I mean, it’s horrible fo

If you liked this, do yourself a favor and dig through the author's archive. Insightful, funny writer who takes a really pragmatic view of his own field in a time of great upheaval. Can't recommend him enough.
