My reasoning for the free updates was to improve it and make it what people want, which would hopefully increase the paid sales. It hasn't worked!

Why do you think it's hell? I've been using it for about 2-3 years now and it's really grown on me over that time. I think the most common complaint is that it is too verbose, but that has its advantages too.

You're right about the main thrust of the article, however a significant part of the article did argue about health issues, obesity and taxing unhealthy living, which I think weakened his argument somewhat. So as a counter to that side of

I feel the same! It's probably because we have a vested interest in this area, but putting that aside it's nice to see something coming from the government that I think is a genuinely good thing (for a change?).

Yea this is the problem I'm not sure that they've solved. There are loads of regional accents in the UK, and only one setting in the language options called 'British English'
