I found the article confusing at first, because they said they discarded HTML5 as an option but in fact ended up using Haxe to generate HTML5. The explanation is that they wanted a desktop-first, multi-platform solution that is able to gene

In my view the user-specific parts and frequently updating data should be rendered on the client side. The pre-rendered HTML should contain the less-frequently changing information that is important for SEO.

Isn't the whole point of server-side rendered React to render it just once, when building the website, and then serve it as static HTML/JS/CSS assets using a static webserver?

Well, yes, you can run your own server to provide yourself a serverless platform, but it kind of defeats the purpose... Since then you end up having to maintain your server anyway. I suppose there may be a point to it if the serverless plat

Even the README says you need to start a server. So it’s not quite serverless. (“Serverless”, at least to me, means a platform where I don’t have to worry about running servers.)

It's interesting that the curve shown in the article started to grow right after Steve Jobs died in 2011. (Too bad the previous years are not shown.)

Amazon Lightsail instances can provide cheaper bandwidth. The $5/month subscription includes 1TB, while 1TB of outgoing data on EC2 would cost $90 ($0.09 per GB). (This is such a big difference that I don't really understand it.)

I had lots of DNS zones in Route 53 that didn't really need to be there. So I moved a bunch of them to ClouDNS, which supports ALIAS records to have apex domains point to CloudFront distributions. Seems to work. Also I realized that Dy

Biggest problem with F.lux used to be that it was tied to geo-location. As a Finnish person (with sometimes only a few hours of sunlight per day), you had to fake your location to something that would approximate the desired circadian rhyth

I think AWS X-Ray deserves to be mentioned here - it tracks requests through different services using tagging and provides visualization. AWS also has other useful tools like SNS and SQS for building loosely coupled microservice systems. In

I think the author is somewhat missing the point that the whole Serverless paradigm is not so much about emulating past architectures without servers. It is more about building completely new kind of architectures, where applications are no

Tip for people using AWS: It's nowadays very easy to create and manage multiple accounts using AWS Organizations. It helps you get into the habit of grouping your services across different Amazon accounts. (I'm not sure what happe

Amazon API Gateway + Lambda, managed by Serverless Framework. Practically free to use for small purposes. For static content that can be (re)published as needed, I'd use S3 + CloudFront and a scheduled or triggered Lambda that handles

Just spent an hour debugging why development scripts work but production doesn't.. Good reminder to configure some kind of notifications from AWS Lambda also when the execution times out, not just on errors.

I think you are right and that the same applies to many other things, too: wanting to be a developer vs. wanting to develop things, wanting to be a manager vs. wanting to manage things, and so on.

I think JavaScript is an excellent choice. This is about getting people started, and you can start making your own apps in the browser right away with very little overhead. You can also ignore boring stuff like static types and only learn t

From my perspective, a devops person (in the context of AWS) is someone who, in addition to coding, knows how to monitor and configure all the AWS services. E.g. they know how to provision right amount of DynamoDB capacity for the applicati

I would argue that by using CONSTANT == variable, you are reducing the cognitive load of the compiler, but increasing the cognitive load of the human reading the code (who has to mentally flip the expression around). I think the original ar

Did you put a lot of effort in writing original text content for the website? My experience has been that, even if a website might be useful for other reasons, it needs to have lots of original text e.g. to be approved for Google ads.
