I also recommend Things, because it's an app that makes you feel good if you're into OS X and iOS style user interfaces. I bought it years ago, but truly started using it when they got the Things Cloud sync working. So now I always keep it

Perhaps that makes sense. Actually I usually type 'workon myproject' (using virtualenvwrapper, because it provides a nice standard location and activation command for virtualenvs), so maybe this could all be transparent.

But what will be the added CO2 footprint of launching so many unnecessary shells! Also, I don't like the prospect of having to hit Ctrl-D twice to logout.

I would point out that in Apple's iOS case, the sliders are always consistent in two ways: - The slider always displays the current value. So the UI reads quite naturally: "Airplane Mode is OFF". - The "Off" value is always without color (g

Rails currently wins if you want to make a "typical" web application, which allows people to sign up with email/password/Facebook. Implementing these things with Django requires uncomfortable tweaking, because custom user models have not be

At the risk of sounding unhackerish, I actually want the UI to do the right thing by default . So I support this. I thought differently 10 years ago ("let the user middle-click if they want"), but nowadays I believe in the 80% rule. Make i

I'm not entirely sure I believe this claim. Ergonomically poor surroundings typically force you to change your stance often, because you get uncomfortable quickly. And in the long term, moving around a lot is generally better than standing

The most common way a WordPress site gets hacked seems to be through security vulnerabilities present in the WordPress code or some of the installed plugins. I assume this in no way provides protection from them.

I don't really see how that headphone rule could work in practice. Wouldn't everybody just be wearing headphones all the time, except when they stand up to have a break and socialize? Or do people consciously segment their time into slots w

It sounds like a sad life, if you are supposed to live it by some specific rules that make it possible to get a public sector job later on. I think if this is the situation, it is the public sector that needs fixing, not peoples' lives or F

Notably both Android and iPhone require you to install a third-party app in order to scan QR codes. I think if (when) this changes, QR codes will really become frictionless, since you no longer need to instruct the end-user how to first ins

I think the article's point was that Unicode characters U+2028 and U+2029 are illegal in JavaScript string literals. Yet, the JSON specification (RFC 4627) officially allows them to exist in JSON string literals: "All Unicode characters may

Very much agree with this. Websites rarely require users to choose a unique username nowadays (email is enough) and it's been a pain hacking Django to work like that, since many email addresses won't fit in the username field. In fact I alw

One related topic that I find interesting is how some programmers feel compelled to make a pivotal distinction between "unique" and "practically unique" with regards to random UUIDs. They refuse to insert UUIDs into a database blindly, even

I would claim thare are benefits in a framework having a similar API for both for SQL-ORM and NoSQL-ODM. This has already been done in the Ruby on Rails world, where ActiveRecord and Mongoid exist in parallel and have similar interfaces. Th
