What I, and others, find objectionable about your post is that you frame yourself as an altruistic contributor while downplaying the fact that you have orders of magnitude more to gain from this than you contribute. Implying that a 50bp tax

I mean, of course you support a proposal to wipe off 80% of your entire student debt. I don't think you get to call it "giving back to the community" when you're a net taker under the proposal.

Money is fungible. Saying that the expenditure is funded by a tax on Wall Street is just clever bullshit to make it look like the taxpayers aren't on the hook for this absurdly expensive amnesty. The truth is those are two entirely ort

So you haven't heard about the Libertarian party, which got close to 5% of the popular vote last election? There is absolutely a large demographic (which includes libertarians but also goes far beyond) which wants to drastically reduce

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard suggested yet. It goes against every value of fairness we hold. Bernie essentially wants to forcibly take money from everyone who was financially responsible enough to save and pay o

A way to apply this to a startup today is to have a budget for each team (or even individual) that they can spend on fun activities (office beer, team bonding night out, or whatever other activity, something people look forward to) and have

Then good thing I didn't just notice this on "western media" and instead went and saw it for myself in Hong Kong. I've talked to HKers of all ages. Sorry to have to break it to you, but it is unanimous. An overwhelming m

A key difference to understand between protests in America and in Hong Kong is that there is no division in Hong Kong about the issue. In the US, for example, half of the population opposes Trump and half supports him. There are anti-Trump

The HK police won't disobey its government. If they did, it'd give China an excuse to use its army in HK which would undoubtedly make things an order of magnitude worse.

Pretty much. I don't think anyone has much hope of achieving change, but they protest anyways because they feel it's their civic duty.

I don't have any real answers and I don't know that there is really much that can be done. At the very least this should not be swept under the rug, I would want everyone to know what is happening. If the CCP can get away with it

No, not really. The government has been stacked with pro-Beijing people, who have all the executive and legislative power. The only choice people have is to vote for new representative, from a slate of options picked out by the CCP. That wa

I'm in Hong Kong and went to the protests today. This feels like a continuation of the '14 umbrella movement, which was ended by police force, and which left up pent-up anger in the whole population. It's the biggest protest

Rentals are cheaper. I can get a nice 1br in mid-levels for ~20k HKD (i.e. $2.5k). In SF these days, I'm not getting a decent 1br in a desirable location under $4k. My $3.5k rent was considered way under market.

Actually I think tying anything housing related to the measure is a great way to ensure it'll be a total clusterfuck. There's way too much disagreement on the matter, and any spending on it quickly devolves into an endless money p

Growing up in Switzerland, when we lived on the outskirts of Bern, we would get our milk from such a dispenser at a farm. It was a 5min walk to the farm, and we'd bring our own bottle and fill it up from a spout. The milk was fresh and

The higher you go, the tighter your flight envelope gets as you approach the "coffin corner" and the more likely you are to stall. A stall is very bad (you lose lift and fall out of the sky). https://en.wikipedia.org&#x
