We were also talking when writing the blog post that it depends on what the interface is for. When designing a site that accepts user-generated content (whether it be LayerVault or Facebook), the interface—is in many respects—only there to

So far, no browser pain at all with the data-attributes. When dealing with numbers, you will often find yourself making many calls to parseInt(). Other than that, it's smooth sailing.

When first building LayerVault around this time last year, the simplicity of delayed_job appealed to me. Not having to set up and maintain a Redis application was a bonus. The simple '.delay' syntax sealed the deal for me. That being said,

Very true. I see some folks assume that to get that realtime performance, you need to start with a "realtime" framework. We probably will hit a ceiling with Rails (once we decide to take the time to update down from 500ms to 50ms, perhaps)

There's a great jQuery plugin that we use at LayerVault to handle this called timeago: http://timeago.yarp.com/ If you're taking screenshots of things, that's your own prerogative.

I'm no expert, but having JS/CSS served out based on DB-dependent values seems dumb. I would say it wasn't your fault, but the technical debt collector coming around.

I've been back and forth from Berlin for a little while now. My company's home base is in NYC, but I sometimes work out of Berlin. Even this year while I was there (Feb. - May), the startup scene is exploding. I liken it to the satisfaction

I think specific flavors of unlimited make sense. It sounds like Corkboard can offer unlimited storage but with a cap of 50MB on files. The number of people willing to jump through the hoops required to make that truly unlimited is likely v
