Just as an aside, the last time we seriously talked about manned Mars missions was in the '70s. NERVA would have been powerful enough to make the round trip in 90 days, but the program was canned in '72. This 501 day trip will be an inter

Yeah, it does seem a little useful for lightweight development and testing. Though I find it bizarre that anyone doing professional web development can't spare the 1MB for an Nginx or Lighttpd install.

I am arguing it is not even useful for that. If you simply want to share files across a LAN (the use case for these oneliners), SimpleHTTPServer falls flat on its face. It'll transfer large files at DSL-like rates and time out completely

Most of these should be tools of last resort, the technological equivalent knowing how to start a fire without matches. The performance of SimpleHTTPServer is abysmal, particularly if you want to serve a few files over 100MB or thousands o

If "safe" wants to compete, it should do so by being more fun than "dangerous". No one stops anyone from making any "safe" system (automobile or recreational drug or whatever) and why should anyone stop someone from trying to make a "dang

A little more context from that episode - this 1.8 GP camera thing was in part because operators would get tunnel vision when running the mega-zoom camera on the Predator drone for too long. They'd be tracking a van and miss the larger con

Well yeah, the GPL states that it needs to be trivially easy for end-users to replace the GPL chunk with their own code. Because in the past (Tivo) GPL code was used against people. Two separate packages is the simplest way to do it. And

It takes more energy for an LCD to show a black pixel. It is not much compared to the backlight, though. On one of my laptops solid black uses 0.5 watts more than solid white.

You get that for free if your network is good. In college, we'd wire up half a dozen rooms to the same icecast server. The server itself could not participate, but there was no lag between the clients (all on the same network switch).

It is the camera. Those images all look like they were shot at very low ISO. This means you get absolutely noise-free images at the expense of long shutter times. Architecture is good at holding still for pictures, so it is not much of a

The tuning range depends on the hardware. See the first table at http://sdr.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/rtl-sdr for details. All have 2.8MHz bandwidth. A (relatively) simple hardware mod lets you bypass the tuner and pick up 0Hz to 28MHz. Noi

Over water seems rather reasonable considering what we can do with cable laying ships. Whatever method is used to get it up in the air, it'll need to be safely reversible. Over water bringing it down is much easier. And you'll have to bri
