A lot happens in the book and it explores a large number of interesting ideas. Sure it is long, but every part fits well together. As a result the universe feels more fleshed out and cohesive than the Culture books, and this is something

Though if you prefer hard sci-fi to space opera, skip Culture and start with The Algebrist. I can't pin down why, but it was a much more enjoyable read and has a higher density of parts that make you think.

Those are called transits and occlusions. Very dull and quite frequent. And gas giants don't have a fixed surface you can stand on. I guess you could find the optimal distance to hover in your space ship to see an eclipse, assuming i

An amazing actual coincidence is that the sun and moon appear almost the same size as each other from the surface. The opportunity for such perfect total solar eclipses (with naked-eye visible Baily's Beads) is not common in the unive

What do you think of LiFePO4 chemistry? The energy density is not so great, per-volume it is on par with NiMH. But they can provide lots of current and have a very flat discharge curve and are pretty much fireproof. Oh, and have much bet

I think these studies underestimate how lazy a well-fed cat is. Lots of annecdotes ahoy! I feed (and fix and tame and try to place) a decent number of local strays. In the past five years I've only seen a cat really hunt twice - af
