In my cases, disk is cheap and I don't particularly care about utilization. The ability to wipe away errors whenever the need arises is priceless.

Export zvols from a central fileserver via iscsi, and install the exposed operating system on it. Snap the zvols on the fileserver. Unless your fileserver is compromised, there's no way the ransomeware can persist in your network.

"All MIT men carry batteries for emergencies." Sounds about right. "One night, they ran into another group of pranksters from Brown University" Harvard, destined to be the butt of everyone's jokes.

Yeah, interallied debt to the US was linked to German reparations which stopped in 1932 (I think?). The US wasn't fussed about it...so I'm not sure it was a default. The other one I can think of was the downgrade of the coupon on

When was the last time the US or the UK defaulted on their debt? The credit rating system is necessarily bayesian, and EM markets all have their most recent defaults within the models' event horizons.

Even in tech, 8 years is not a long time. When I said that there was SCCS in use at a major bank in 2010, the hope therefore was that the reader would think "that probably means that SCCS is in use elsewhere".

I migrated the mortgage desk of a major investment bank off SCCS in 2010. These old tools are more common than the cool kids would have you believe.

All my pencils growing up were either red/black or yellow/black, depending on how hard they were. I miss Staedtler pencils.

Vegas hiking is good in fall, winter and spring. The heat necessarily means that you limit yourself to indoor activities during the summer, and that's just fine by me!

Might have misused the phrase -- I was simply referring to how hot it gets during the summer.

It's fine. We have our industrial air conditioning units and swimming pools, and there is plenty to do indoors for the duration of the summer.

We took one whiff of California's tax and housing regime and bought a house in Las Vegas. So what if it's a charnel house for three months every year, the lack of state tax and reasonable housing prices make it worth it.
