Vision transformers are good enough that you can use them alone even on cursive handwriting. I've had amazing results with Microsoft's models and have my own little piece of wrapper software I use to transcribe blog posts I write

I've had very poor results using LLaVa for OCR. It's slow and usually can't transcribe more than a few words. I think this is because it's just using CLIP to encode the image into a singular embedding vector for the LLM.

Yeah I'm pretty sure even cubsat launch prices have dropped by an order of magnitude. It will be affordable by amateurs within a decade at this rate.

Gemma2 has gotten good enough that it's competitive with copilot and is completely self hostable. Companies are starting to publish full size base models too. I think the time to bring your AI service in house is here.

It's likely the point of the war was really to clear out Ukraine, not defend the borders. The leader isn't Ukrainian himself and that has effectively been what he did.

Unless you live in a city a bunker really isn't necessary. Just tape trash bags over any blown out windows so rain/dust doesn't get in and don't go outside for a couple weeks.

I use XMPP and then Cheogram for people who don't want to figure it out. That way for people who don't care everything just works and for people who do they get a rich experience with E2EE. Unlike eg iOS/imessage I don't

I live on solar power and would definitely pay a premium for fewer solar panels that produce the same amount of power. There's a tropical storm coming through and I just had to pull them all down. I'm going to have to put them all

No one wants to build things, it's all administration masquerading as development. Back before I gave up on life in general I used to program in my free time because I really wasn't doing much of it at work. It's frustrating.

There's still a lot my Palm 3xe can do that an iPhone can't. Smartphones feel like a regression in most ways except improvements in a handful of hardware peripherals.

No I think the underlying assets/labor will get cheaper (IE there will be deflation, especially locally in Florida.)

But you don't have to on Linux. Like there's just so much crap you have to do to make these non-free OSes pleasant or private and it's always blowing up. Linux mostly "just works" OOTB.

Here's what I would do. Hire some people to start building it, publish the code under a copyleft license such as the GPL and start hiring consultants to contribute to it. This will give you control over the critical "must haves&qu

I don't know. I used to say this but then you look at places where it's been done like Canada and the PNW and the results are pretty disappointing. I think the answer to drug use is to make life worth being sober for rather than m
