Nice clip. The bit about the payphones reminded me of an interview with Jonathan Ive where he talked about why they put a handle on the first iMac. He said that making it easy to carry was part of it, but that the bigger motivation was wh

Very true. Spending a lot of time getting the toolbar to look great is good. Doing that by tossing out the system toolbar and hacking together your own is very questionable, though. The link they put in at the bottom suggests that Leopard

It's always a tough call in these situations whether the improvement is worth all the work (and the time spent away from other, bigger issues). Zooming out a little, though, it's hard to imagine how you could develop a well-designed, elega

He gets at a really smart point here, and it's really the most important one of the article: if your existence helps secure others' existence, then you're sitting in the catbird seat. To paraphrase a professor of mine from a couple years a

Facebook is probably one of the best unified experiences, but I guess if you're looking for something very OS-y, something like this is more your bag. Users shouldn't have to be the ones to worry about interoperability, but c'est la vie.

"'What was missing from the market was the notion of the unified experience,' [Robertson] said." I don't understand the obsession people have with cramming thousands of apps into a single site. It seems to miss the point of the web. Isn'

What a great article. It's nice seeing a piece that's scientific but still emphasizes the importance of subjective, unscientific wonder. To paraphrase the writer, light pollution is bad for a lot of reasons, but mostly because the night s

The answer is almost certainly no. To my mind, Facebook dominates for three things: basic personal info (looking up someone's phone number, seeing where they work, etc.), photos, and events. I don't know Orkut well, but if beating Faceboo

Great article. Generalized personalization is going to be an increasingly big deal. In a few years, I think it'll be expected that almost any site you visit already knows who you are and what you're like.

Good article indeed, especially coming from the sometimes-hysterical folks at TechCrunch. The phrase "walled garden" comes to mind. Facebook is undoubtedly the best social networking site on the web, and I don't see why it won't continue t

For now, the users lose. Right now, iTunes is probably the best way to get TV shows online and legally (although ABC's free video player is pretty excellent), but it's hard to imagine that the $2 per show model will still be the dominant o

I agree with you on the shabby state of CSS support, but it's hard to see how more font options will be bad for design. Horrible designs will always exist, so the fact that they have more fonts to choose from won't make them worse. It'll

Openness is good, but if they want wide adoption, UI is a huge factor. Google's history is pretty hit-or-miss in that regard. GMail: hit. Google Video: miss. The inevitable iPhone comparison (in the event that this even turns out to be

Yes, definitely. From a UI perspective, the power of the desktop is something no web app can touch. Web apps are around because the thing they do that desktop apps don't--pulling information from other computers into the cloud--is hugely
