I have to update the screenshots for my iOS app, but it seems that I should submit a new binary, which in turn pushes it all my users. I wonder if it would help to have a checkbox "This update is not worth pushing to already installed

I understand and respect that you're not against AMP for personal reasons. An acquaintance of mine was complaining that Google didn't give him a way to opt his site out of AMP. If he's right, that's a bad move on Google&

I know you don't work on search, but I still wanted to let you know I'm happy whenever an AMP site loads, because its instant, and that it loads at all, as opposed to other sites that may time out on my slow unreliable cellular co

I don't see us having a constructive exchange of views, where each person gets a perspective they didn't have earlier, so I won't reply. Have a good day.

Rather than respoding to the points I made about AMP, you're focusing on an ad-hominem criticism of me personally. Please stop doing that.

Google said that they prioritise fast pages, not AMP pages. You can use some other way to make your pages load fast, and it won't make a difference. Unless you have solid evidence to the contrary, I see no reason to believe you over be

Which search result, and which obscure AMP result ranks higher than which non-AMP result? That's what needs to be cited, not an assertion free of evidence. Second, even if that does happen, the question is whether it would have happene

Thanks. Please see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14526419 for the problem with the web. Maybe I'll just end up writing two separate apps in Swift.

Thanks, but I need access to some system APIs. Now, I can always bridge them to the web, with two implementations, one for iOS and one for macOS, but that seems like doing the framework's work myself. If I do that, I might as well do t

I wonder if this is a divide between geeks / power users / developers on one hand, who want more speed, and average users, who want more space. Every time someone talks about speed, that statement comes from a geek. By contrast, I

Maybe you're right that in a few years, I'll be able to buy a 6TB SSD for the $200 I'd pay for a hard disc today, but speaking as a user about to buy a computer, I want one that works great today. Which means worrying less ab

No, you don't get to grant or deny access to a particular granularity of location, which Android has.

That's a good point. Maybe app developers should be able to request the level of access they want, like precise location, neighborhood (postal code), city, state or country. If an app never needs more precise information than the count

On the contrary, usaphp is making a valid point, which is that the Surface has two modes, and that many things that work well in one mode don't work well in the other. In tablet mode, you're generally using lighter weight apps, so

Your last point is interesting, but RAM is as relevant a spec as some of the others Apple still lists, like the A10 64-bit processor. If I'm not supposed to care how much memory there is, why should I care whether there's a 64-bit

I'll go one step further — any pro tablet, and any $1000+ device, should have it builtin. It doesn't add much cost. You can get an entire smartphone with LTE for less than $100. So maybe the LTE costs $20.

Good point — though I don't have any Thunderbolt 3 devices or docks, the Surface is limited by not having a Thunderbolt 3 port, because I may buy a device later, perhaps the LG Ultrafine 5k monitor. We need more compatibility, not less

I did that once, and I wished that I could plug my phone in to my iPad to charge it. That didn't work because the iPad uses Apple's proprietary Lightning connector rather than the standard USB-C. If my iPad had USB-C, I could have

It's not just the cost, but also the hassle of getting SIM cards, submitting documentation to get each (in India), paying multiple bills, tracking which plan you're on for each SIM card, and so on.

Exactly. Bragging about how they didn't add a mm to the iMac to make it "pro", and that it's art, is as clear an indication as we'll get that Apple has forgotten why we power users buy their machines. It's to g

Half-height arrow keys should be banned. Especially given how often we use them. What a poor tradeoff of visual design over usability.

Thanks for sharing Apple's rationale, but I disagree. The bottleneck is space, not speed, of SSDs. Few people need a GB per second of read or write more than they need space. If compression gives me even a GB of extra space on a 128GB

Compression is worth it if it saves even a GB on a 128 SSD, or a few hundred MB on a 16GB iPhone. In an alternate universe where all Macs come with at least 512GB storage, things might be different. Footnote: Apple still sells 16GB devices:
