I'm still sad Yahoo shut down Astrid [0] after acquisition - my personal intersection with the many, many small companies they acquired and shuttered. [0] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrid_(application)

Most technological capabilities improve relatively monotonically, albeit at highly varying paces. I believe it's a reasonable position to take as the default condition, and burden of proof to the contrary lies on the challenger.

I have very fond memories of overclocking our 50 MHz Pentium to 75 MHz (after adding in a fan). Magic.

The single photo is remarkably elegant - a spare, almost modernist design.

I assume these are well-vetted as real discoveries, but can't help but think of "Albinoni's" Adagio: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adagio_in_G_minor Still looking forward to listening!

I see several folks commenting on this from the perspective of software engineering. Keep in mind that those are a small minority of Amazon's enormous workforce: an estimate a few years back [0] was 3.5%. [0] https://newsle

It sounds to me like you're in favor of grading on effort. I don't believe that investment made in time or money should factor in to assessing a student's mastery.

Almost everyone prices that way - that is how supply and demand works. Bezos's wealth is ~100% due to stock appreciation, which in turn is tied much more closely to AWS than to the consumer store.

I find it interesting when folks criticize software for not being free / open source. There's nothing stopping you from creating the FOSS you are disappointed someone else didn't create - or from investing your own time into

Anyone with, say, a fifth grader in the US can compare notes with parents elsewhere in the country. If your experience is at all like mine you'll be startled at the (odd to me!) shared culture. Especially if they spend time online.

A big part of why I like shopping at Costco is that they generally don't sell garbage. Their filter doesn't always match mine, but they do have a meaningful filter.

Temperature isn't a power source; heat flowing across a temperature gradient can be. But that brings us back to the first problem - how to make it flow.
