Exactly. Classical economics assumes everyone's utility function == income. What about the pleasure of a job well done, companionship/relationship, job satisfaction, etc.? Well, since they can't be quantified they are ignored.

I agree -- I rarely (few times per week) receive spam to my main inbox. I used to obfuscate my email address, but realized it doesn't matter. Spammers will get at you no matter what (unused email addresses get spam), and obfuscation just an

What a great example of killing the golden goose. "Yes, I spent a full minute clicking through your results to find what I needed. You showed me 3 more ads than normal, and now I'll never, ever, return."

Yeah, I really dislike those watered down, make-everyone-happy type of review conclusions. Take a stand!

Web browsing on the kindle is painful enough that I'd only use it for emergencies.

Yes, and how many work in their retail stores (not sure if that's included). Every Apple store I've been to seems to have a 1:1 customer to employee ratio.

I really appreciate your book summaries and sharing -- I just picked up that book now. The motivation of "sharing everything before you die" is awesome.

Interesting article, though I think the rationale (find an algorithmic engine to identify quality content) a bit forced. Solving that problem seems similar to building an AI capable of interpreting what a human being would think. Far simple

+1 for notational velocity -- it's my scratch area for infrequently used commands, random links, half-written blog posts, todo items... it's just simple enough to get the job done, and blazingly fast.

There are lots of costs with hiring another person (benefits, facilities, hr/legal, etc.) -- the fully loaded cost of a person may be twice their salary.

Agreed. I was going to look into it, but not having windows support means you block 90% of your market. It's deceptive because saying "cross platform" to a developer (especially for a desktop app) means "runs on most devices". Using the ter

I really dislike that quote too, it's a tautology along the lines of "You keep losing until you win". If you haven't won yet it's because it's just around the corner -- just put up with the ignoring, laughing, fighting a bit longer. Never m

Just for fun, I made a quick calc for you: http://tinyurl.com/3xl32bx In 50 years at 1.3% growth we'll basically double our population, and go from about 8000 m^2 per person to 4000 m^2 per person. After 780 years, the growth starts addin

You raise a good point re: assumptions -- I think the hidden axiom is "The bible is the literal word of God. Therefore, if there's a contradiction then my idea of a perfect God is flawed, and probably doesn't exist". Maybe I'm naive, but I

Yeah, I think "brevity" isn't the perfect word because it seems to imply shortness. I mean it to be more of making every word tell, which I think those writers do.

@grellas, @lotharbot, great points. Yep, the goal of writing is to communicate an idea -- brevity is a tactic. I love this quote by Einstein: Things should be as simple as possible, but not more so. If something is truly necessary, then kee

Agreed -- good communication is about understanding your audience and circling back into detail as needed. Aka, do a breadth-first sweep, vs. depth-first.

Agreed -- a recent blog post on HN (I can't seem to find it now) mentioned how an author had to turn a 500-page book into a 700-page one to make it seem "authoritative". This thinking basically games our heuristics -- if all else is equal (

I debated the irony of having an essay on brevity that wasn't short. But, I realized my goal was to have (hopefully) several meaningful thoughts, vs. a single short one. These are basically the thoughts / fears that go through my head when

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, in this case I decided to keep the "superflous" cat because it offers more flexibility/readability -- i.e., what if you want another command before the first sort? With the 2nd version you have to remove foo.tx

The 99.8% includes a known test set for historic viruses from the 80s and 90s. The stuff you really care about are the new things that sweep the web (Blaster, Slammer, Code Red, etc.). AV is inherently reactive, and that .2% you miss is lik
