10-3-1 is extremely expensive, but even 3-1 could give a lot of benefits.

Thanks for posting this. I enjoy blogging but have found linear writing difficult to organize -- I'll have sections above and below, filled with thoughts, and try to merge them together. Just yesterday I was playing around with FreeMind and

I agree with the article. Other manufacturers have had a decade to inspire people with tablets, and failed. People don't want a desktop pc in another form factor.

But that's exactly the problem for developers. How many different devices are you willing to test on? Will your app's interface easily scale to all these different form factors? A huge advantage of the iphone is that there's a single screen

Good article, I especially liked the quote: "Avoid the dualistic mistakes of technical execution without intuition, and intuition without technical execution.". Personally, I feel that if you don't have an intuition for something you don't

I really dislike these inverse guides -- they fight a strawman by negating an obviously false statement. You see this in programming essays, where people show examples of absurd commenting (i++; // increment i). Yes, yes, we're reasonably i

Agreed. If you come in expecting an all-singing, all-dancing desktop/laptop/server replacement you'll be disappointed. If you want a device to read PDFs, play some games, and browse the web it's fantastic. iPad + GoodReader + 10 hour batter

Seamonkey is a good wysiwyg editor. You can visit any page, save it, and do edit HTML. It's not excellent but is better than raw text editing for ux mockup ideas.

Agreed -- I had just found Titanium and was gearing up to make app ports using it. Now I'm nervous whether they will be allowed.

Yeah, there's definitely an uncanny valley where you start thinking it's a "buggy" desktop app vs. being a really slick web app.

Exactly. You don't improve by parroting details like this in your own presentations, you want to gain the mindset that would make you care about having such detail.

Yeah, the neat thing about Apple's strategy is that they've allowed 150k individual apps to flourish already. They can look at the APIs they provide and say "We handle 80/90/95% of the tasks needed by these apps". It's real-world customer d

I think this is the right way to go about it... rather than giving apps whole-hog access where they can burn up cpu and memory at will, in a black box, Apple can do a "don't call us, we'll call you" type of API. Apple can monitor exactly wh

I agree. I remember a few years ago getting a laptop (Lenovo x61) almost solely based on weight and size. Why? Physical dimensions are the only thing that don't become obsolete. Small and portable is forever.

I don't think anyone would accuse google of falsifying data, but stats can be misleading. I might have missed it, but I didn't see a standard deviation for those numbers -- if you're doing several reads and they happen to be "above average"

Ah, I've recently switched to vim so I can't reap the benefits :). I have contemplated geeking out and tagging these entries [blog] [exercise] and similar, so I could later analyze what areas give me the most satisfaction. But that's too mu

Nice, I have a "Funstuff" list which are things I like to do: drawing, karate, acoustic guitar listening... It's funny how we need to write these down, but we do. Off the top of my head I can "forget" that I like to draw when I'm bored. In

Those are great examples. Regular PCs are like giving people drum kits because it satisfies all the "requirements". The iPad is like giving you maracas, a tambourine, or bongo drums. Same functionality? No. Vastly more fun for beginners? Ye

Actually I find it quite different from high-school essays. In the "5 paragraph essay" you have 3 ideas, in the middle, and you summarize them in the intro and re-summarize in the conclusion. This advocates the journalism focus of getting y

I like the phrasing of the title, i.e. keeping track of what actually works. One tip that's helped me: when something makes you feel good, add it to feelgood.txt. Over time, you'll start to see patterns (vs. the random, fallible memories/id

I also roll my eyes when people compare it to a PC replacement. It's not, just like your xbox or nintendo ds is not a pc replacement. It's an entertainment device. The problem is that we see web surfing and think it must be done on a Work M

Exactly. I got a kindle not for its intrinsic merits, but because of the behavior change. $200 is a very cheap way for me to read more books. Anecdotally, I'm reading about 3x as many books; I've cut down on my random surfing time and inste
