I've actually worked at Google and been certified to use all of the shops including welding and metalworking. And the industrial grade heavy duty plasma cutter. The shops are really cool and they serve a slightly different purpose than for

Let me disagree. Within certain demographics, high tech loving makers, you can sometimes get away with using WebGL: http://tinkercad.com Our stats indicate the IE is much less of a problem than expected.

Just curious, how familiar are you with Paxos? I'm asking because failure detection is pretty much isomorphic with distributed consensus and generally considered hard. Ie. how do you differentiate between down and slow?

Doozer is a really interesting project. We run a Go based lockserver at Tinkercad but we haven't got around to adding redundant storage. Doozer on the other hand is tighly focused on just the storage part, which usually is much less applica

I thought the list was good without having any intention of looking at the software mentioned. Also, if I were to write a similar list I would probably mention a bunch of software in a similar tone as the author does, except I would obvious

There is a second really important reason to blog, if you write software (and are any good at it). Blogging is a great way to improve your writing and the more senior you become the more you will find that your challenge is not just grokkin

For Tinkercad the http server is just a relatively simple transport layer, the magic happens with how the computation is distributed in the cluster. We'll blog about it once things settle down a bit, at this point we are just trying to sold

WebSockets are really cool but we found the browser implementations unstable enough that we switched back to XHR for Tinkercad. Especially since the secure implementations were super shaky and we run all our traffic over SSL. We also use Go

What a disappointing piece of writing. Having worked with BigTable for several years at my previous gig I find the whole premise of NoSQL hilarious. BigTable really is a very specific solution to a very specific problem, creating a datastor

I disagree with the tone of your comment. The book cited in the article, "Art and Fear", was first published in 1994. Having read both this article and the original book I strongly argue that neither has lost relevance over time. Re-posts a

Thanks, we are pretty excited about it! :-) We use WebGL for rendering on the client side. We have a custom 3D engine written just for Tinkercad. Our main UI guy is an ex game graphics/AI programmer http://digestingduck.blogspot.com/ . He'

Probably true, but it would be trivial to run the physics loop a few times before rendering the first frame to remove the jitter. A neophyte developer would know how to do this and the folks at Rovio are pretty experienced. My vote is with

I think it's sometimes easy for (passionate) programmers to forget that they happen to be obsessed with something that is also a highly marketable skill. From our little group of elementary school computer enthusiasts only one other guy and
