Krasin is right, most of the stuff on tinkercad.com is written in Go. There are a few inner loops that use C++ to get better SSE optimizations.

This depends largely on material choice and to a lesser extent on which supplier you choose. Tinkercad is a design package, we don't do the printing ourself but outsource it to printing services like Shapeways and i.Materialise. I would sug

The answer is somewhat technical so bear with me. tl;dr solid modeling is O(n^3) Computer graphics, which is what most games require, is largely a solved problem. An iPad or a WebGL browser is easily able to run most games from a few years

Yes. Real Soon Now (tm). :-) Generic import is starting to be pretty close on the roadmap. After that it's just a question of adding file types as people request them. IGES and STEP are definitely on the list.

We definitely want to make an API available that would allow almost anything to connect to the core editor. Using that it should be possible to write specific tools (like a lathe or extrusion style tool). We see Tinkercad as a core around w

I used to live in Mountain View, CA and only moved back to Finland quite recently so we have a very strong connection to the Valley. It's no coincidence that we took money from the likes of Joshua, Eghosa, Taher and Jyri who all operate in

The first thing you need to realize is that Tinkercad is only partially a browser application, we also run a relatively complex cloud based component. Every operation you make is actually distributed across a 100 core cluster with the resul

If you are interested in a production quality open source pathfinding library take a look at Recast/Detour. It's used in a number of AAA game titles and is probably one of the most robust implementations out there: http://code.google.com/p

Having seen the demo scene from its inception in the late eighties I find it fascinating that after all these years we are close to saturating our analog senses with this digitally created content. 32bit pixels saturated color perception, c

This statement is false for people writing large scale distributed systems. It turns out tens or hundreds of thousands of computers are more expensive than engineering time. No amount of clean will fix gaping million dollar holes in the bud

We are made a cloud-based solid CAD application using it: http://tinkercad.com I think it's important that WebGL gets pushed to the browser. Getting a stable 3D environment is super important for application development and obviously game

This is a good article on why research into new devices or physics should keep a healthy dose of experimentation in addition to any computer simulations. I've done a fair amount of simulation work and agree strongly with the notion that peo

Some of the protobuf implementations are a bit more official than others. We are using the Go protobuf plugin at Tinkercad and it's maintained by Google for internal use. Given the importance of protobufs in communicating across Google is p

I find it fascinating that cloud has become almost a synonym for rapid provisioning and VPS based systems. I think this is really short sighted. Having a great uptime or latency does not automatically follow from being able to spin up tons

This was a reference to the machine shop in general and lathes in particular. Cloth will sooner or later get caught in rotating machinery. This is the same reason why machinists don't wear long sleeved shirts. I haven't heard of any glove t
