Organized religion, certainly. However, there is a lot of conflation of Religion and religion (or faith). I don't disagree with your point, it just deals with very semantically messy stuff.

I doubt that there will be a mass defect from the people still using IE6, but I'm always happy to hear that IE's use is on the decline. That browser has been a thorn in my side for too many years now.

Interesting. I had been pointing people at HTDP if they had trouble with SICP, I'll have to check this out.

Another point about homeless shelters is that it is only a small percentage of the homeless that stayed in them. I know that when I was homeless, I stayed away from homeless shelters for the vast majority of my time in any city, except for

It depends on how often you need to write scripts of this sort. If you only write them once in a while, you're probably fine with using two commands, but if you write scripts all the time, it's worth it to know how to do them succinctly.

I'm not familiar with this whole TechCrunch debacle, other than reading about that guy being spit on. By "grown-up", I mean "thinking before posting, and posting in a way that indicates that one has a generally 'mature' mental-model". This

Assuming you've been coding for a while, I'd recommend taking a look at Concrete Mathematics ( http://www.amazon.com/Concrete-Mathematics-Foundation-Comput... ). It's a challenging book, but it's extremely well-written, and you should b

I'd personally like to say "Please keep HN civil, free from trolling, and intellectual." This site has been a great resource - and that's at least partially because the tone of the vast majority of the community here is pretty serious. I ha

I semi-agree. I have been an autodidact all of my life, and poor (and occasionally homeless) most of my adult life. I'm still young. I've been learning partially via online video lectures (specifically MIT's OCW) and course materials since

Makes sense. There's definitely a focus on feedback from coders in most open-source apps - and that makes sense as well, although I'm sure it can be frustrating. As a coder, I've found that it can be very hard to communicate with non-coders

I prefer jQuery. Mainly because for what I do with javascript, it feels a lot more "declarative" (best word I can think of at the moment) than Prototype.

I had been considering getting a kindle when I got some spare cash, but hadn't taken the time to really research them yet (waiting until I could afford one - plus there will probably be better options by that time). I'm afraid that the lack

I bookmarked this, as I haven't attended college as of yet, but will probably be in a college as of fall of this year or spring of 2009. Sounds like an interesting tool at the least.

Php is, in my opinion, a "templating" language (yes, I know it's not just a templating language). Closer to "scripting" than the other categories.

Pick PHP if you're very concerned with being able to find a quick, cheap online host for your web-app and you don't want to bother with learning another language (or with learning how to deploy web-apps in other languages, which really isn'
