I was not clear: I wanted to say that this is how I think the "reasoning" goes. Obviously, almost everyone has got something to lose .

You won't slap me in the face because you've got something to lose. A house, family, job, .. Someone homeless hasn't! edit: typo corrected!

You had me confused for a second, I didn't realise I was talking to jpolitz :) Thanks for bringing that up. AFAICT, he (advisor) has done a lot to make that happen, indeed.

@ open access: In my specific subfield of academic CS, a huge success story was ECOOP (one of the biggest conferences in the field) going open access last year. I'm hoping that there'll be other conferences following suit. My mone

Sorry if I've come on too strong. I might've gotten a bit defensive. I've done work in the past that is hard to reproduce and that's not an aspect of my work I'm proud of -- to say the least. Btw, I'm excited a

The problem here is (EDIT: IMHO) a social one. The question is not "Why does nobody USE NixOS?", it's "Why does nobody WANT NixOS?" And the answer to that is that the incentives are set up such that reproducibility

What you say is sound but, IMO, not complete. There's something more to immutability vs. mutability. They both can , for instance, describe both data bases and mathematics. But there's no doubt in my mind that mutable state is be

I think that FP is a valuable addition, but not strictly better than OOP (or procedural/imperative). I think that some problems are better expressed in FP, and some are better expressed in an imperative manner and a language should let

Granted, lower taxes are different. Better infrastructure, more child support, ... still are the same problem, IMO. Yet, the system -- somehow -- works. FWIW, that's the reason I'm in Churchill's camp: "It has been said

Sure. "Exclusionary as hell" is a stretch. In either case, I still think it shouldn't be in anyone's code base. There are some people who are offended by it and -- even though I'm not one of them -- the project can

Content discovery does work using citations. How it can be meaningfully improved, I don't know. Often, the missing piece will come from a completely different discipline. I don't see how this gap could be bridged using only citati

There have always been a number of german speaking states with close cultural ties. The german identity goes back to the battle of Varus [1], they say. This is 8-9 centuries before the formation of the holy roman empire (aka "First Rei

This is an example where you'd really want static types for ergonomics. Having to name the monad explicitly does not allow to write generic code (i.e, instead of saying `Maybe.return` to just say `return).
