I'd be interested to hear some specific ways that Brian defined and maintained this company culture. For example, what was one vision of environment, vision, or values, and how did that affect an instance of hiring or process?

Awesome to hear all of that. I'm so glad that it's been helpful. That's why I do it, after all!

Thanks for recommending "Design for Hackers!" (I wrote it) I think your advice is good. So much design is really about thinking. If you have a clear picture of what the experience is like for your user, and can create some wireframes or pen

I just found this on the "DecidingToBeBetter" subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/DecidingToBeBetter/comments/12jh16/p... One comment: '"Permission to suck" is quite the erotic sentence :)'

Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job comes to mind. They make an art of "sucking." Lou Reed has a horribly sucky singing voice. I love him for it.

Good points. Part of being okay with sucking is that if you're okay with sucking – you're more likely to be okay with shipping. The surprising thing I've found about being okay about sucking at writing is that often the "barf drafts" (as I

I've been playing guitar for 13 years, and I still am not very good. A breakthrough for me though, was when I stopped obsessing over getting every note right, and instead focused on strumming the right chords. Then, I found playing much mor

Hehe, I was just describing what my friend said about meditating. I did, in fact, tell her that it wasn't really about thinking about "nothing." Talking about the specifics of meditation wasn't really my aim here :)

If distribution was the problem, wouldn't this be taken care of by having a huge group of indie filmmakers banded together. I'm feeling very naïve about the movie industry here – is what we're describing simply a movie studio?

As I was editing this article, I was thinking the same thing myself. My guess is, it would be pretty tricky to turn a profit: movies like Primer are going to be rare. But maybe you could get the formula right? Find filmmakers with collabora

Great move by both of these companies. I had dinner with Mike McGee (one of the co-founders) a couple of months ago, and could hardly believe my ears when I heard his story of bootstrapping Code Academy. These guys generated serious revenue

Yeah, Verdana is fantastic on screen (this was especially so before anti-aliasing was standard), but looks awful in print. EDIT: also, didn't know about IKEA's Verdanagate (from your link above). Fascinating!

Actually, while Georgia is a good font overall, the design is Georgia is optimized for the screen. Because of this, it has some peculiarities, such as a very large x-height (so the pixels in the counterforms can be read). Here's a little mo
