I spent a LOT of time in the late 80s and the 90s wrestling with class hierarchies, coming up with one tower of abstraction after another. So much wasted time; perhaps it didn't help that my vehicles were C++ and Java, but I think that

If cryptocurrencies are "democratic", then so in the same sense are disease, starvation and violence. Available to anyone. Doesn't make them a good thing. All I see are scams, hype, and tricks to get marks to stuff more money

Describing Win32 as a "narrow waist" (hundreds of interfaces, thousands of calls, no idea how many structures) seems off the mark. I don't get it. It seems like the target got painted where the arrow landed.

My family has had 4 cars in the last 15 years (I won't mention models, but they were fairly reasonable, middle-of-the-pack vehicles). Three of them had no defects at all. The most recent one, a hybrid with a bunch of fancy electronics,

My first job out of college at Atari in 1982, writing game cartridges for the 400/800 computers, paid $25K a year. My first raise after a year was to $30K. There were programmers in other divisions making royalties off of their games.

I think we can agree that if you don't have tests, you don't have a compiler. You don't have anything , really not even a toy. But there are too many languages out there in production that don't have debugging support w

Someone made a video that imagined changes a company like EA or Blizzard might make to Elden Ring, charging for extra arrows, fees for questlines, microtransactions for boss assists, and so forth. It made me feel sick. I could totally see a

If you are designing or implementing a language, do the debugger first . Well, very early, anyway. Think of this as deep introspection into how well your design holds together. If you can't write an effective debugger for the thing yo

Unclear what you're asking. Generally I've stayed 5-8 years at any one company (the most so far was 11). My time at a few startups were far shorter than that, for pretty guessable reasons.
