Completely off-topic. Came here to say that I hate that stupid ticker at the top. Utterly unnecessary, gratuitous, overboard animation, even when the price of an item didn't actually change ! Immediately switched to Reader View in Fir

I have always wondered if we , as a species, are the problem. Maybe we’re really not supposed to spread and colonize every part of Earth. Maybe we’re supposed to stay within much narrower areas where the local produce is good enough. Not s

I’m not a mechanical engineer by any means. But all aluminium body in that squary shape? That seems like asking to be dented. I wonder what aluminium alloy they use (and how thick it is). Can any real mechanical engineer comment on that?

The Pragmatic Programmer also warns against overzealous deduplication. Stuff that are coincidentally the same should be left untouched. Only remove duplication of knowledge .

I wish I could like reading certain technical books in dead tree format, but I recently bought both the digital and dead tree versions of the Pragmatic Programmer, 20th anniversary edition; and I really couldn’t stand the lack of colour s

Yeah, but that won't be the same Alpinist. Especially given the Prospex logo, which is a bit weird because my impression of the Prospex line is that it is mostly a diver's line, whereas the Alpinist is supposed to be a climber

I would totally envy you if you tell me you have the one with the green dial. Do you have the proper "Red Alpinist" (with the actual "Alpinist" word printed on the dial) or the "SPORTS 200" version? I have the

Isn't that just planned obsolescence? Isn't the EU very much opposed to that kind of business strategy? Shouldn't there be some law in the EU prohibiting that? I mean, I wouldn't force the manufacturers to keep supportin

Is Elon Musk a Samuel Beckett fan? I can totally picture a city council asking what's taking a tunnel project so long to complete, and Musk answering, with a straight face, "Oh, we're just waiting for Godot."

Is it possible that tetrachromat people may have a lot of trouble shopping for painting supplies? Since the dye or pigment used on the packaging may not be the same as the dye or pigment in the actual pastel/watercolour/whatever.

Yeah. Same sentiment. If I wanted to buy a hackable mobile Linux device, I don't see why I would buy this instead of a PineBook Pro (when it comes out). I would really hate typing on a silicone keyboard.

I’d argue that YouTube is a for-profit business. They have every right, within legal bounds, to do whatever makes economic sense to them. If you want an archive, go with archive.org. But even then, nothing is free. If somebody thinks a foot

This makes for an interesting comparison to Japan. I’ve lived in rural Tokyo for about two months, and local produce is a thing there. The produce doesn’t need to be sold at a market. The farmers just sell their produce on the roadside, rig
