Where do I find non-tracking ad brokers? I know readthedocs.io has its own ethicalads.io ad platform, but they only want developer-focused sites as publishers. What if I have a non-tech site and I want to host some non-tracking ads to offse

Yep. That’s why we talk about the observable universe. Objects outside the radius of the observable universe are moving away from us so quickly that any light or gravitational effect from those objects have no chance of reaching us any lo

epub is basically many html files packaged together and indexed. So rendering for printing can be taken care of with the right media-querying CSS.

Printing can actually be fixed with the right CSS. The opposite is not true for PDF: you can't fix PDF for responsive rendering. As for rogue JS, there are good, open-source countermeasures such as dompurify.

epub 2 and epub 3 are both much better formats than PDF if you really want to publish ebooks. PDF is not reflowable and results in a crappy reading experience unless the device screen size is just right.

Technically commendable. But please please please stop contributing to PDF, especially in the conversion to PDF. It’s a horrible format.

Part of the reason is that ensuring things work for a different CPU architecture is simply a non-trivial task. There are libraries with hand-written x86 assembly, and others in C/C++ that depend on x86 intrinsics to perform acceptabl

Thanks for sharing this. I’m an insect nerd myself (mostly lepidoptera, apocrita, and orthoptera). I once raised hundreds (maybe even over a thousand) of Bombix mori, just to show my daughter the lifecycle of moths. My sister in law runs a

I think being CLI-first (and maybe API-first) is a really clever strategy. My gut feeling is that it’s much easier to get a CLI/API right than to get a GUI right. So you can just expose an API or a machine-parsable CLI, and let people

I wasn't talking about runtime performance at all. I was talking about coding speed. (I don't think the commenters before me were talking about runtime performance either? Did I misunderstand?)

Static typing can be a bitch to get right. There are quite a few weird cases where it would be natural to write without types, but tricky once you introduce static typing and want to keep pleasing the TypeScript type checker, usually involv

That glaive (more correctly "guandao") has a name in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, btw: 青龍偃月刀 (Green Dragon Crescent Blade), also known as 冷艷鋸 (Frost Fair Blade). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Drago

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's Guan Yu. For those wondering, Guan Yu was a general of legendary prowess during the Three Kingdoms period of Ancient China. He is deified and represents loyalty and justice. Ironically, in Hong Kong, bo

Assuming all browsers are going to implement this partitioning, doesn’t it give web devs even more reason to use 3rd-party CDNs? You’re not paying for the traffic and you don’t have to worry about users’ privacy.

The “10 tomato plants per person” number makes things look pretty dire, in my eyes. World population is about 7,800,000,000. The population of Germany is about 83,000,000. That makes roughly 940 tomato plants to offset the CO2 emission of o
