I never said to not get a competing offer. I said not to take (accept) a counteroffer. In fact, I think it is good practice to do interviews every once in a while to see what the market is willing to pay for you.

This can quite backfire if you like everything else about the company. They could quite easily just say "well then go." Also it might make it clear that you have a certain flight risk. I personally would never go the counteroffer

Yes, but Bay Area and Europe are different scale :) While I was still living in the Bay Area, once I thought I could walk from the car dealership to the rental car company, because on google maps it looked quite close... big mistake.
