I haven't used Xfce in a long time either. Lately I've been an Openbox/tint2 kind of guy. I remember my first days of Linux. It was Debian testing with a lightweight Xfce desktop.

There's always Python. I hear a lot about how it's a good language for beginning programmers. It has a very clean syntax, and in my opinion, is very easy to read.

I used Debian testing with openbox/tint2 on my Toshiba NB505 for a while. It has a 1.66GHz Atom with 1GB of RAM. It ran pretty snappy.
