This exactly. I’d love to not have to work for a living so I could spend my days tinkering on projects, drawing, learning an instrument, etc. There’s so much to learn and resources to do so have never been more abundant or readily available

More problematic than this is that there are many images on Adobe Stock that were stolen and put up for sale by parties entirely unrelated to the artists who produced them. Worse, they don’t make it easy to report image theft and generally

Even some newer houses have garage space issues. Mine was built in the mid-2000s, and thanks to the way the face furnace+AC unit is installed, 14.5’ is the longest car that can be parked in it, and even that’s not ideal because it leaves no

A Horde assault phase that sticks around is doable if you add client modding into the mix. The possibilities are really endless. It’s totally impractical but the thing I’d like to do is a “unified” Azeroth that treats all the continents as

I relate to this. So many hours burned on WoW in my teens and twenties… After hitting 25 or so it progressively more difficult to play with a clean conscience. Despite having a good job and secure finances there was an ever-present voice in

Timeframe makes a big difference. 2010-2012 was the tail end of WotLK through Cataclysm, and by then leveling content had been trivialized (especially after Cata’s release in late 2010). Not that it was ever particularly difficult relative

I believe the main issue is that it’s difficult to have any kind of consistent/coherent design in a desktop where everything is optional. Building good UI for managing panels can also be challenging.

Totally agree. I tinkered around with an openbox+tint2 setup several years ago and was able to get it to a usable state, but getting all the little things working is so fussy and flaky, with e.g. the need to hunt down suitable daemons to ge

The thing about Classic is that it doesn’t work well if one is trying to race to cap and raid readiness. Leveling and gearing up is as much “the real game” as endgame raiding is. As such, it works a lot better when played at a relaxed pace

All this is true, but naturally the projects that can scale are going to be getting the majority of dev attention since those can be used for large scale private server projects like Nostralius. There’s not nearly as strong of a “market”

I think that an underrated element in the success of early WoW is how it’s not all that complicated or technical and generally didn’t take itself that seriously (if even if some players did). Modern MMOs are almost the exact opposite, espec

It might prove more challenging than one might expect, because the Classic clients are actually modern WoW clients patched to behave like the originals. Blizzard apparently evaluated using the original clients, but found that differences in

While the most common uses of cores like this is to spin up “blizzlike” servers or “funservers” that use the original content but with boosted XP, loot, etc multipliers, to me what makes them interesting is when combined with client modding

The Mac version, which was enhanced to run at 640x480 and had a game disc that did double duty as a redbook audio CD soundtrack, was bundled with the Performa 6400 that was the family computer in my house in the mid-90s. I wasn’t able to pl

The two kind of feed into each other. The UI framework is conducive to polished UI, which results in more polished apps, which raises the bar of expectations for users. This then pressures developers to deliver more polished apps. This is w

In my experience, producing a polished Electron/web app takes substantially more effort than it does to produce an AppKit/UIKit equivalent. Those don’t get you multiplatform, but that’s why a lot of devs who care about these thing

In general I’m a fan of the aesthetic of Win2K’s icons. Strikes a nice middleground between old and new, and as you’ve described it’s just satisfying somehow.

At minimum, to escape the uncanny valley it’d be necessary to develop a new suite of standard utility apps that closely follow the older, more detailed OS X HIG[0]. Forking existing apps and modifying them could also work, but details are a

In the long run it might be more fruitful to build a FOSS true clone of the Mac desktop for Linux and the BSDs. It’s going to take a massive amount of work to produce something even as smooth as OS X 10.4, 10.6, or 10.9, though. It’s someth
