Part of this is that a lot of things have become a lot more tightly coupled with Linux in the past couple decades. OS X Snow Leopard, often positioned as the “best” macOS release, also had a number of significant differences from Linux, but

I’ll echo that. Laptops have been “fast enough” for a long time, which is why I can break out an Core 2 Duo laptop from 2008 and still get a lot done with it, but somehow despite far better process nodes and battery tech, battery life is on

I love hackery like this that pushes hardware capabilities to their limits. It’s kinda like extreme overclocking, except somehow both more crazy and usually more likely to have an end result that’s practical for day to day usage.

With the One they also made the mistake of trying to permanently tie discs to consoles in an attempt to destroy the used game market for the console, which got leaked pretty early on and led to Microsoft and the Xbox brand taking a massive

I wish Apple hadn’t dropped out of the router business. The only good replacements all seem to be considerably more involved, e.g. a full Ubiquiti setup or one of the more mainstream routers with third party firmware. AirPorts were excellen

Though, circumvention of these things isn’t always even that involved, depending on the competency of IT. At the religious private high school I attended, all it took to make a student a “hacker” was popping open Internet Options on the com

It’s what I run on my home server. Most of my interaction with a command line is with macOS, which makes BSDs more familiar, and jails are nice for containment that works without external tools. First class built in ZFS is nice too.

Support for some platforms with C# is also a bit lacking. Getting C# stuff up and running on FreeBSD can be a challenge for example.

Nah there’s at least a few hundred gigs available at any given time. Usually the breakage has to do with plugins just ceasing to function or Plex somehow forgetting its library exists, which results in only the free-stream-crap channels sho

I think they wanted to somewhat replicate what they had on macOS, where the best and most popular apps were those built by indie/boutique dev houses that cared specifically about building great iOS apps . Lowest common denominator app

I think the main issue is that the monetization efforts have resulted in blunted focus on the core product, resulting in things like long-standing unresolved bugs and technical oddities. For example the Plex installation on my home server w

Well maybe, but smart TV and streaming box browsers are unlikely to implement all the functionality pertinent to a high-grade home theater experience. Apps are better here, so what I had in mind was closer to standardization around existing

Couldn’t this be addressed by standardizing around a protocol? That way client and server are decoupled and existing clients can work with new media server projects.

Looks nice. One thing I’ve noticed is that media server projects seem to have a disposition towards C# specifically, which I find interesting. Is there a technical reason for this or is more of a big project setting norms situation?

I see the logic, but in my opinion fumbles with this shortcut are catastrophic enough (sitting there waiting for N files to open in however many apps so they can all be closed) that the “logical” option shouldn’t necessarily be favored. Tha

In the past 15 years, what’s kept me from keeping a collection of CDs and blurays is the space they take up. It’s nothing compared to say vinyl records or VHS tapes, but it’s still substantial if you have more than just a handful and makes
