Engineer working on Hack here. It's complicated. If you use partial mode, which doesn't enforce that every function is fully typed, then it's trivial to break the type system by just using an untyped function. In order to eas

About a year ago I did the same thing with IE 5.1 for Mac, which was Microsoft's couterpart from this era. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150673019866971.... It had its own set of insane quirks, even worse than Windows IE5. I

Unfortunately what we nowadays call "regular expressions" aren't the regular expressions from math class -- they can match against much more than regular languages. I believe PCRE, i.e., the "regular expression" language for most regex libr

One of the most insightful points in the article, summing up much of DEF CON, got buried near the end of the article; it's worth emphasizing: It's not about breaking the lock [...] it's about learning the lock can be broken.

An interesting feature of app-specific passwords -- which helps to mitigate the complaint in the article -- is that if you are logged in with one, you cannot access some core settings to the account without going through the two-factor proc

The difference is that with a web browser, you can switch from IE to a superior browser and all your favorite web sites will still work (apps built for IE6 compatibility notwithstanding). This isn't true of switching from x86 Windows to som

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that it's something approximately like this: In the event of an error and journal replay, the filesystem metadata can be recovered, but not necessarily the data itself. ext3

My favorite PHP design misfeature: what does the following code do? <?php $foo = array("a", "b", "c"); foreach ($foo as &$bar) echo $bar; echo "\n"; foreach ($foo as $bar) echo $bar; echo "\n"; The "&" i

But then it means that "==" is no longer transitive, which I see as very unnatural and confusing (even if the underlying reasoning sort-of makes sense).

My understanding is that this was a bug with the previous authentication scheme, before they rolled out OAuth. Changing your password revokes old tokens for all authentication schemes and thus mitigates the problem.

Exactly -- this is an important point Harper misses here. In SML, you can have functions of type "unit -> unit" and have no idea what the heck it is doing. The language allows effects, and so it could be doing anything . Even a functio

The problem with C0 (it's "C-naught", not "C-not") is that it is a toy language used for the compilers class which has somehow made it down into the intro curriculum. It is not useful in the real world; absolutely no one outside of CMU uses
