And don't forget what I think is the most impressive, the transition from 68k to PowerPC. When they first did this, parts of the kernel were still compiled for 68k. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_68K_emulator

While the discussion in that thread may or may not apply to OS X, be very careful when saying "X is true about Mach therefore X is probably true about Darwin". A friend of mine put it very well: OS X was Mach once in the same way that orc

I don't like the weather. It's too rainy and spring and fall are far too short (some of my friends call fall/spring "poorly dithered winter and summer", since it tends to just jump back and forth between cold and hot for a week or two).

Pittsburgh, seriously? Between the small, crowded, pothole-filled roads and buses which are never on time, it's impossible for me to get anywhere around here. The Steelers football fanaticism drives me insane and the weather is terrible. I

Source IP filters really slow you down Can you elaborate on this or provide a reference? I've never heard this before and am curious what the implications of various iptables filters are.

Yes, but that doesn't help their employees get around when one of their destinations isn't work. Having functioning public transit is a major selling point of the area and thus for those working for these companies.

With all the trouble that the Caltrain is having, and with all the good that it does for employees at Valley companies, why don't they do something about this? Google could certainly buy the train outright, though they probably don't want t

Here's a YouTube link to the entire Pale Blue Dot bit by Sagan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wupToqz1e2g Sagan is absolutely amazing. It really does put things in perspective.

The PyPy version is faster, as the article and commenters point out, because the PyPy JIT can inline a call across a module boundary. GCC can do something like this with -fwhole-program, but that doesn't work on shared libraries. Has any wo

As I understand it, the problem for IPv6 is with existing routing hardware and with testing. So if you're going to go through all the effort to add a new octet (which requires changing the IP packet format to allow for the extra space, for

I agree that Quora is not a good platform for blogging. It's a feature, not a bug -- Quora is an excellent QA site, nothing more and nothing less.

The article mentions scraping public Facebook data. Someone else did that a while ago, resulting in a change to their robots.txt (it's now a whitelist) and nearly a lawsuit. http://petewarden.typepad.com/searchbrowser/2010/04/how-i-go...

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the app spam came from one of a few apps (e.g. Farmville) or one of a few people (e.g. my aunt who doesn't know any better). Blocking those app-heavy people as well as a few more widespread apps remove

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way -- users are foolish and will shoot themselves in the foot quite often, all while blaming you. If there were an option to, for example, disallow sharing of X on app Y, users would click it without unde

People who read HN , myself included, want more granular control, sure. I don't think most of Facebook's users would care or understand about the granular control -- I think a simple yes/no like Facebook has right now is probably the best

Stylistically, there are a huge number of things wrong with this. The idea is good, but if you actually write code this way you'll have a slow, unmaintainable mess of a kernel. The biggest issues that jump out at me are the horrible overuse

When I was writing a malloc implementation for a class, I defined a value I used in place of NULL to terminate a structure sort of like a linked list. With debugging off, it actually was defined to NULL; with debugging on, it was defined to

Languages like SML and OCaml also use this sort of type inference, but you tend to not need type annotations in those languages except in very special cases. I think this is also fairly true of Haskell -- type inference works in 99% of the

One of the notes on the report is someone who did try to dig up the discussion and couldn't find it, only a bunch of people saying without reasons "we do not need finally". It seems polite to me for someone who knows when/where said discuss
