Why would you, at all, stay in a place where you're checked out? True, it might work at Intel or Microsoft, but most companies are 200 people or less.

While the caricature is entertaining, I have never worked in a corporation that works at all like what's described. At companies I've worked at, if you're checked out, you do not last. At companies I've worked at, some p

The post hinges on the faulty assumption that calculating the address of an lvalue "evaluates" that lvalue. This is not so. Any compiler that generates anything other than an add instruction (or lea or similar) is broken, for rath

This is entirely wrong. Taking the address of a field doesn't evaluate the field, and any compiler that does a load for that is broken.

Still no support for static compile and runtime introspection. That could be easily and cheaply implemented, at least for POD and aggregates thereof. If I have to build one more system that requires either a custom parser or repeating the n

Maybe it's personal, but I, too, hate the full justification. US newspapers used to do a lot of that, too, whereas European one didn't. It is shown that full justification is detrimental to actual reading. That being said, I don&#

The problem here is that regular people are not involved, other than as tax payers. Corporations get to raid coffers of nation state tax rolls. Normal people not involved.

Those who don't learn make are doomed to reimplement it. Poorly. Also: never, ever, build a make system that relies on recursive make invocations. Automake is a particularly egregious violator is this rule (and other sanity rules) and

In the US, once you pay an initial retainer, a layer will sometimes work on a contingency basis - meaning they get one third of the final settlement. Given that UMG is a rich target, and the claim seems very strong, you might find someone l

I agree: Magic ring buffers are cool! (We used then in BeOS in 1999!) Separately, watch the number of mmap segments. Linux kernel uses a tree to manage then, and the O(log N) operations really start to hurt at larger numbers.
