Math is somewhat unique in that the high-school and early college version is not at all representative of the real thing. Its not "just a taste", its qualitatively different. As the other comment above mentioned, I think this has

You may be surprised that this also applies to math. High-level math values logical and linguistic skills. This is often a hard stopping point for many students who were good at high school computation like calculus.

See my example. It was very short and helped me clarify immensely what I was going to write. You're right that if I am going to add another template to a Django site, there isn't much math to think about. But anything bigger than

This article is not about formal verification. Why would mathematical thinking involve rejecting physical realities? If there is a performance constraint you are trying to optimize, account for it. > Write a program that captures network

Glad you liked it. I mentioned in another comment, I am really emphasizing modeling the problem mathematically, not really using formal programming methods like lambda calculus. Sounds like you got my idea!

Author here. I would say that modeling the computational process in math is not typically helpful (you already have a formal programming language) you should model the real-world (or at least computer world) problem you are trying to solve.

I believe this is a comment about interests of the fields akin to differences between math and physics. They still approach computation using mathematical reasoning methods. Note how they define car and cdr and how they approach problems in

Reading math is an acquired skill. Once you have it, these things aren't annoying. See my comment above. However, in this article I am not advocating that mathematical thinking is using one letter notation. I simply follow that convent

names work well in programs because the variable typically models something in the world we understand. company.name, NetworkConnection, etc. In math and in programming this isn't always the case. Often you have a variable "epislo

It seems to me that languages are making it more convenient to write DSL's, or adding them for you without totally opening up the language. For example LINQ in C# lets you build an AST and evaluate it at runtime for database-like langu

This definitely sucks. Why do you think people are buying this book? Is it required for a course? When there is a book I need, but don't want, I'll get by with a PDF. When its a book I want, I buy the real thing, because I enjoy h

I think I agree with a lot of your post, but do you really think something isn't worth learning just because other people are going to know it better? Will hyper-specialization make better developers? Or would developers be better if t

Author here. Definitely agree. The intent was to write the simplest possible to VM that could run real programs. VMs are obviously a deep field of research and there are plenty more projects to learn from.
