The article author comes across as bitter. He's clearly talented and productive, but likely is not strong at the kind of skills you need to solve puzzles in an interview setting. A good interviewer will be able to spot that and evaluat

People in the north of England are said to be warmer and friendlier than those in the south. The north was mostly industrial and rural whilst the south has London's financial district and the Home Counties where the "posh" li

My bank never calls me. They send a secure message over the banks online system or leave a recorded message on my phone. They don't give a number to call back, so that I have to look up the real one. Not that those measures would have

I'm a bit confused about how you use this system with immutable keys. At face value it's a great idea, but I need a simple example of how's it is used to say retrieve a piece of data, then later update that to a new value. Is

I used to write animation, physics and AI code for video games. I got the point where I was just moving company to company and writing the same system. What I moved into was still video game related but server side. This way I had to learn

That's a great reason to go into management. I also was in a position where I felt there was nothing else to learn as I could just build the same thing over and over. I moved into a different technical area instead.

I read the emacs lisp code quite often. It's very nicely documented and easy to read in general.

There are skills involved, and I wouldn't say they were lesser than those needed for programming. But in the same vein, I'd say spending a few days learning to make bread to sell in a cart does not compare to the years it takes to

People outside the industry make these kind of generalisations all the time but in practise it's nonsense. Sure millions of kids may want to be video programmers, but very few are qualified (i.e: can program well enough and have suffic

Inherent reason to me would be that the skills of food vendors are more common and easily acquired than those of game developers. I have a BSc in CS and over 10 years experience. This guy learned to make bread from his girlfriend and opened

You'd need to sell a lot of bread to make even an average US game programmers salary. The reason being that the work is creative and technically skilled. There are fewer people able to do it and that pushes up salaries. Like any indust

Assessing empathy would be inaccurate and subjective. The act of assessment may bias the final result. The random selection into two groups should do better than that, assuming the sample size is statistically significant. This experiment c

I really like this project because for me one of the most impressive things about emacs is the way that it can be extended and the self-documenting nature of those extensions. I'll be interested to see if the same principals will be us

I was at first annoyed that coal was described as cheap in the article, and then relieved to hear that in the US the EPA is adding the environmental cost back into the equation. Hope that China follows in the reduction of coal fueled power.
