It was no BMW, just a Dodge. If I do buy a car again I'll definitely do more research on reliability repair and service costs. Or buy a $1000 car and consider it disposable.

Actually in the real world browsing files by access or modified time is usually quicker because the number of items is small. There may be a set of 10-20 files that I've recent opened and the one I want will be in the top 3-5 very ofte

I find modern cars are very expensive to fix and I have no interest in learning how to do it myself. I bought a car over a few years with the intention that when it is paid for I would enjoy a few more years for free. But the maintenance co

It's fairly easy to go through that kind of money depending on where you live. If you're living in SF or NY you could well be spending $4k-$5k on rent or a mortgage. Supporting a spouse and children is very expensive even before y

I'm an emacs user but I often use a GUI IDE when it makes sense. I find I'd rather use JetBrains products (PHPStorm, PyCharm and IntelliJ) even though the actual text editing part is nowhere near as powerful and efficient as my Em

Maybe because VW had somewhat of a reputation for being a good quality car manufacturer that would have no need to cheat and lie about their vehicles. Whereas cheating and lying is a common perception of Wall St firms in general.

This is a very good point. I work on a team with 7 Scala developers of varied experience. When someone commits code it is reviewed. If the reviewer doesn't understand the code we will talk it over as a group and either learn the new te

I can see drivers/passengers travelling together for weeks or months at a time. So you'd probably just want to quit Lyft and enter a private arrangement. Is there anything in Lyft's business model to prevent or mitigate this?

Not everybody wants to be entertained the same way that you do. In fact I think the market has shown us that most people like simple games that they can play for a few minutes at time, that don't involve much strategy or twitch skill t

Local salaries are driven by supply and demand. Tech workers in Vancouver are paid very well compared to other workers in the city. If all tech workers suddenly demanded 20% raises I guess it would happen, but at lowered profit margin for t

Ha. That's true but as a Londoner living in Vancouver I can tell you that for young people here moving to London would be exciting and educational compared to staying at home for the same money, so many would leave for that reason.
