Wow, COM Structured Storage. That brings back memories, but not necessarily good ones. And as for working with OLE... ouch.

The owner of a bike shop I used to frequent had a Moulton (one of the old space-frame ones) with a 5-speed hub and a derailleur on the back and three rings on the front. He said he wanted to see just how many gears he could actually get o

I'm careful with my phones but don't like cases, and I solved the slippery phone problem with some non-slip tape - a couple of strips on the back meant the phone didn't slide, and didn't add bulk. It has worked well for

My wife and I drove that a few years ago on our NY-to-SF trip, and it was a truly memorable experience. And somewhere out in the desert you'd see a tiny wooden house left by a settler; we knew there was another town a few tens of miles

Same for me - 8 years of piano with regular exams, gave it up in my teens because I didn't want to play just classical stuff, and all that practicing was just plain boring. Haven't touched a keyboard since (and have carefully forg

Yep! I remember as a (very) junior dev being told that I was 'responsible' for product documentation. When I asked what I had to do, I was told "nothing, you're just responsible". And like you I got grief when thing

I'm just sorting out my late father's stuff. He was an avid photographer and so I've got hundreds - probably a couple of thousand - 35mm slides, along with a load of printed ephemera. I do have a slide scanner but it only wor

I often think about this. My grandmother was born at the end of the 1800s (yes, I'm old) and remembered electricity and the first car coming to her rural village in Wales. By the end of her life she'd lived through two world wars,

This is what I think about a lot of the "agile development" advice I see on the web. Projects are different, clients are different, teams are different. What works for you may not work for me. Heck, what worked in my last project

I once failed a job interview because they said that they thought I'd take the extensive training and then leave for a better paid job. TBF they were completely correct, but it was a bit of a surprise.

I once had a large company pay me 10x what they owed, and giving the extra back to them was quite a performance. I remember the long suffering lady in their accounts department saying that it was "like pushing the egg back up the chick

And at this time of year you're quite likely to meet a house-sized tractor or combine coming round the bend. Those don't hang around either! I'm amazed there aren't a lot more fatal accidents on country roads.

I'm lucky in that we have a good friend who's a dental surgeon, so we're confident in getting good treatment. But someone is setting up a practice in my area (South London) that fits with what a lot of people here are seeing:

I once went to teach a training course to a team at some BigCo, and there was one guy who'd switched to software development from being a baker. He'd worked up to owning two shops, but the leases expired and he couldn't affor
